Can it be done? Does anybody know some realitvly cheap speakers I can pick up that I would actually be able to hear while riding? I have cans for 6.5 inch speakers but am willing to think about 6X9's as well.
On a college budget so cost is everything...

kicker or sony xplode would probably be the way to go. It won't sound great, but they are definitely the cheapest name brands out there. Paired up with a decent amp, they actually won't be that bad.

would it make a difference if I spring for a component system? does it really help having the tweeters sepereated from the cone?

just get some outdoor / PA type horn tweeters for about $5 a pair on ebay... can't be beat as far as dB/$ at a distance.

Trace, if I were to do the PA tweeters would I need to run them off of a crossover or something like that? Or could I run them off my existing amp?
thanks for the help, this is just what I was looking for...

I'm pretty sure most of them have built-in capacitors to knock down the low frequencies, but a crossover would be more efficient.

JB, normally a component system can 'take' more wattage...that's what we're after here. The Sony's/Pioneers/etc...normally around 55w rms max. That's not much. Take the HIGH end (usually) component...(NVS), they can take a couple hundred. That's when you can tell the diff. So, basically....find a speaker that can take the wattage...and ALSO, get an amp that will push it. ebay.

Try infinity's kappa model 6.5. They have a very good spl rating and will handle lots of power.

Loud and Cheap is doable. It's when you add "sounds good" and/or "reliable" that it gets difficult.

I have had good luck with the Pioneer TS-a1781r 4 ways. I picked some up off e-bay for about $40 about a year ago and stuffed them in some cans for a buddy.
