flooring

I am installing flooring in the house. The hallway to the bedrooms can be closed off. Do you guys think that it's necessary to do the hallway and all the bedrooms in the same style, or can each bedroom be a different style/color?

Anything is possible, but the difficulty depends on the brand/style and your floor plan. If its the floating interlocking style, you can change up the color anywhere you like. The hard part is lining up the joints in the doorway so the change over looks natural.

Your other option is to cut it in the doorway and lay a molding strip between the change over. The molding just glues down. This will not be as clean looking and any type of "distressed" style would probably not work.

I've got laminate that runs into two tile floors. The strip was supposed to be a clip in style on fasterners that would be bolted down to the substrate. Of course, they would not "bite" and I ended up buying a real oak threshold strip to make the transition. While the transitions are holding up well, I had to reset one of them due to push around toy (skates, scooters, etc) rollovers.

I honestly like different textures and styies in a house, but I have a difficult time pulling the trigger myself. The outside of my house is boring, but a house down the street from my friends had 5 different textures. Brick, stucco, paint, rough sawn cedar and maybe some field stone. Sounds busy, but it looks good.

Make sure you stop one flooring material and start the next on under the door when the door is closed. That way with the door closed you can't see the other type of floor. It isn't uncommon to have multiple floor types throughout a house. We usually will tile laundry and bathrooms, hardwood common areas and stairs and sometimes carpet in bedrooms. It's your house so you only have to please yourself.

I prefer one continuous style/color. "wood flooring" was originally just how floors were made... so the entire house would be the same wood. so from a purist view, I like that idea better. You can change the look of the bedrooms w/wall color and/or area rugs that complement the wood instead... Just my opinion.
