Im looking into buying a used boat. Ive rode behind an 02 malibu and liked it but not an x5. 2002 Malibu wakesetter $25000 with 112 hours, or 2000 Mastercraft x-5 for $20000 with 300 hours and a nice stereo. How many hours is too many to buy? Any opinions on a x-5?

Neither one of those boats are near the concerned hours of too much. They are both practically just broken in. I think you will find that the Wakesetter will have more room and space and will also ride a bit better. With the wedge option it also frees up some floor space. The X5 throws a nice meaty wake as well. Both boats throw well defined, shaped wakes.
I have been behind both and believe it or not even owning my current boat, a 2000 MC X-Star, I still would take the Wakesetter over the X5. Bit newer, love the Wakesetter graphics, and also the wake on the Wakesetter has more of a potential on gaining amplitude if it has the wedge option and some addition sacs. IT was the same hull that was on their flagshipp VLX boat. Also like the lip the Wedge puts on the Wakesetter's wake with that model. Not saying the X5 is a disappointment, but it's all personal preference in wake shape and I prefer that of the Wakesettrs than the X5.

The Wakesetter will compare more directly to a '02 X-star. If you were comparing those it'd be a more difficult call. The X5 is really more geared toward dual sport than just wakeboarding. It's really a waterski designed boat.

My advice would be to look at X-stars or go with the Wakesetter. I wouldn't be too concerned with hours provided the owner has service records. Maybe start being concerned when the hours get over 500 (even then just ensure you've got records). I've very rarely heard of a boats drivetrain failing from anything other than neglect or abuse.

No question. WS. The x5 won't throw half the wake the BU will, and doesn't have near the room in it.

+ that sounds like a pretty good deal on the BU.

Used to own an x-5. Great boat but not a lot of room in it. Also, 20g for a 2000 x-5 is too much. I bought mine for 23g used in 2002. Lived my x-5, but would have to say the WS is more bang for your buck. as far as hours go, I sold my x-5 with 1200 hours on it!!!! NEVER gave me problems. Ran absolutely flawlessly. Tranny and engine.
