Hi there, I am a big guy about 6'5" and weigh about 280 LBS. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a good board to begin with?

I'm close to 6'7 about 200 pounds and ride the GB Harris 143. It is a little hard to learn on but once you get the feel for it look forward to a kick a$$ ride.

IMO the best board for learning for a big guy is teh Double Up Soul 145. It has more surface area than virtually any other board and will not easily catch an edge. It will also reinforce good edging habits. Finally, it is an economical board. It is the board I use for training new riders and still use it for learning new tricks occasionally. My son, 8 yoa, rides the 135 version in competition.

Disclosure: I am a Double Up dealer.
