Never been in that cold but hey whats the worst that could happen, ice build up on the tower? I can see us banging ice off tower with hammer like on Deadliest Catch

In all seriousness, if you went dry suit with that extreme of a water/air temp difference. You'd be sweating like crazy in a dry suit when your actually up and out of the water. Plenty here in MN will shred the day the ice is off the water in a full wet suit, depending on the air temp of course

When I lived in Wisconsin I rode in December one time (drysuit), ice on half of the lake. Don't know the exact temp but it was a little on the chilly side! But last year about this time be and some guys from school at the time went out when the air was 47 and the water was 42 and wore wetsuits. There was still snow on the ground! Good thing for heaters in the boats.

I've been in a drysuit where the water temp on the boat was reading 32*... was not worth it.

I'm in Michigan and we've had 9 straight days over 70, including 88 today. Water was 70 degrees tonight. WTF. Back to the point at hand- 37 is cold for sure. Make sure you get a really good warm up in first and you'll probably be fine though assuming you've got the gear for that kind of water.

Go out and get it... We rode December in UT where the air was 32 and water read 34. NEVER will i do it again, that was cold even for a drysuit.

BTW, I remember being at another event & looking into the water & trying to figure out what these wierd looking things were, then right before the boat came back to get me, I realized it was the water trying to freeze....
Also, sliding large ice chunks was fun....

Our boat never goes in until the mid may, when the water is 50 or so and I can usually get away with a top. But that said 50 is when I usually go in.

Don't know why I posted that it has little value to this thread.

The value is that it makes us all weather boarders look more BA

Yep, MN guy here too. January 1st, 2009, Minnesota River, had to break ice for about 100 yards to get to an opening big enough to just go in circles. Yes, I landed and rode away from this flip. Falling is not an option when it's that cold.

The previous New Year was the coldest I've ridden. The temp was 1F with a -20F windchill. After about 10 seconds, my hands and feet went numb and my eyelids started freezing shut. Oh, what fun!:

April 1 two years ago. Air was 80, water was 45. We don't have/wear wet suits...

You get the boat in idle, stand on the platform, let the boat take the slack out so you only have to float half the distance of the line, holding the handle, fall in and by the time you are on the surface ready to go, the line should be tight. Deep breath before going in the water and count to five once you think you surfaced before breathing again to make sure your head is above the water.

The driver has to be good and we are just out for a ride, not much risky manuevers. By the time signalling letting go, the boat is turning around to get back to rider.

Lets you know you are alive for sure (can litterally feel your heart stop for seconds), and as I always say, it only gets warmer from the first time in...

That's pretty awesome! I would imagine barefooting and hitting a piece of ice would be bad!

Rode sometime in February last year in SW Virginia. I think the water temp was reading about 36, although we had to turn around because the cove we were riding in was totally frozen over with several inches of ice after a certain point so Im thinking the water had to be around 32. Drysuits are a fantastic invention.

This is an inspiring thread. Im in Houston and plan on riding this Sat. The air temp got down to 32 degrees for last two nights but it is a high of 70 this coming Sat. I plan on riding Sat and have been worried that the water might be a little chilly. I will think of the above pic if I get cold jumping into the mildy cool 60 degree water. Im not sure how some of you ride in 30 degree water with a smile on your face. By the way what the hell is that white stuff on the ground? I have never seen that before.

I read alot of people riding with wet suits or dry suits.

I am curious how low of degree you have gotten in without the suit?

Here we where out on the lake this year in April in 54-58 degree water.

Im not going to say it wasn't cold, but it comes along with a certain pride to say you where the first idiot in the water for the year without a suit.

My profile picture on here was me riding on March 18th last year. Air was ~40 and water was in the 30s still. That a chunk of ice I'm jumping over. That's in a shorty, but I took a set a couple days later just to say I did it without a suit. Air was ~50, and water was still under 40.
