nice pics as always Walt! I got you message about doibng demos at Spring ride. I am down. I have been out of town fishing a bass tournament at Shasta. made finals and finished 10th out of 150 anglers. $1300 richer....... now for some wakeboarding

Walt,
Are you still using the 70-200 f4? If so, what is the secret to such perfect shots? I know you can't give away all of your secrets, but my wife has the same setup with a 30D and it seems as if her shots aren't quite as crisp. Any advise is definately appreciated.

Rod - Keep it around 1/2000 and f/5 (or stopped down a bit more). Use your center focus point, and if you are sitting under the tow point, then you should be able to focus once and keep it in manual after that.

Nice shots Walt.

Rod,

Yes I'm still using the 70-200 f/4. I'm usually around f/4 and 1000ish on the shutter speed.

Try using AI servo.

Anyone else notice the faces are not nearly as happy as they are in summertime photos.

oh i saw the cwb bindings and figured the board was cwb as well. i was just stoked to see that ricky is still using that fin design. i remember when he came up with that design years back. pretty cool innovation

man i wish I had a dry suit so i could be out there. Hey what time of the year does it usually get up to 55f ? because my boat won't be getting un-wrapped till late march and if that means i need to catch a ride and bring gas money for a pull so be it :-)

Manual focus huh? I can't get a sharp shot manually focusing on static objects let alone a moving wakeboarder (then again my eyes aren't the best so I love AF.) The one lens I own that I have to manually focus (45mm T/S) I hold down the AF button until I get a focus confirmation beep from the body!Upload

At f4 I'm not sure the rider will stay within DOF even shooting from the boat but if manual focus is giving you consistant results then it's all good.

Walt, I never tried aiservo with the 20D, looks like it works pretty well.

Rich - Were you talking to me? I was just trying to make it simple for people new to wakeboarding photography. If you are under the tow point and can lock in a focus (using automatic) as the rider is getting up, then you can flip it to manual as the rider will always be the exact same distance from you.

I agree with you on f/4. I feel that I have to stopped down or not the entire rider is in focus on some tricks.

Sorry Eubanks, I see what you're saying now, you're talking about an AF lock and then shoot type procedure. When you said manual focus I visualized one actually manually focusing the lens (a lot of the old school guys still do). - my bad! One more tip for that method, change the AF from activating on the half mash on the shutter to the * button on the back and you won't have to set your lens to MF everytime you take a shot, yet AF will be available when you need it. It takes a while to get used to but once you get used to AFing with the * button you'll see how handy it is, especially if when you want to focus and recompose.

Yeah, I've heard that before. Is it possible to do that on the 300D? It seems like it would be helpful...plus it would keep my wife from taking a picture when she is trying to focus.

Eubanks ~ That only works if you are in the center of the boat and all your shots are taken with the rider directly behind the boat. not the best shots IMO.

Great pics Walt! I'm going out on Sunday.... pics to follow.

True, only if you're in the center but the rider can be anywhere. The river is always as far away as the rope length. I don't usually do this, but it is an option for beginners. Early on during boat shots, IMO it can be easy to hit the rope 5 feet in front of the rider...which is obviously a problem shooting at f/4.
