planning to pound in 4x4 posts into a mud bottom pond for the first rail in a winch park. from past experience i find that as you pound on the top of the post it starts to splinter making for a pain when it comes to assembling the sliding structure. i found this post driving cap http://dockmaker.com/Merchant2/merch...Category_Code= but didn't really want to drop the $40 and have to wait for it to be shipped here. any suggestions or advice with this project?

drive em down and cut the tops off. It's what we've done for all the rails we've built here at my lake.

Wrap the top where you're hitting the post with duct tape. This will help it from splitting then cut them down to the height you want.
