I'm just doing some preliminary pricing and trying to decide how I want to do my ballast system. I've used Simer's before and liked them (other than the difficulty at reversing the pump) do they have the "yellow" impeller for the simer pumps too.

Anyway, where and how much is everyone finding the simers at?

awesome thanks guys!!!

Do you know if they make the "yellow" replacement impellers for these pumps (so they don't stick one direction)

Not that I know of.

They come with two impellers so I'm sure they are replaceable. I don't see any for sale seperately though.

Haven't noticed any issues reversing flow.

I wonder if the Jabsco and the Simer impellers are interchangeable??? Most likely not, but one can wonder?

About those pumps at hardwareworld....
Are they self priming like the Jabsco? 600 gal/hr is 10 gal/min so the flow is the same as the Jabscos. Why are they so much cheaper?

They are self priming, as well as "run dry protected", they are very similar to the Jabsco's. The one big difference is they are not ignition protected. So if you plan on putting them in your engine compartment, go with the Jabsco... otherwise there is no reason to pay more than double the price

Oh I put mine under the spotters seat. Ran hose through the bilge to get water to the pump. Then I ran the hose from the pump into the gunwale. Easy run to front or rear of boat.

So what exactly is ignition protection? Sounds like a dumb question I know, but wondering what makes the Jabsco's safe in the engine compartment while the Simer's aren't. If I went to Simers instead of Jabsco's, I could use 4 pumps instead of 2, but mounting them in the engine compartment is really my only option.

Bill, if mounting them in the engine compartment is your only option you better go with Jabsco's. The difference is that Jabsco's have a spark arresting mechanism internal to the pump so there is no way a spark/explosion can occur. Simer's on the other had don't have the mechanism. I'm not sure I've even seen one spark, but with the simer there is a chance... and i wouldn't want to risk it personally. Unless your looking for an insurance settlement in the near future
