They seem rather popular for a number of reasons, my question is what do you do, it anything, about the open grill face. Especally for the dash speakers. How do you keep stuff out??? Is there an after market grill? or possibly something else i have not thought of?

aside from sticking your middle finger through the cone what are you worried about? the cones are carbon fiber, the surrounds are rubber and the tweets are protected with a metal grill. also, they're not all that expensive so if you had to replace a pair, it would probably cost you less than a tank of gas.

That's the good thing; they are not that expensive ($99) and they sound good. We had ours for two summers on the tower and the rubber, dried, cracked and split. There is no protection form the sun/elements so I knew it was only a matter of time. For the next pair I will be covering them with some type of speaker cover when not in use...

oscar

does your boat stay outside a lot in the summer? i know that sounds like a dumb question, but maybe in a slip or something when not in use? just curious, 2 years doesn't sound like a long time, but i guess it's relative.

i hope i get more than 2 years out of mine!}

Well my big consern is they are facing up on the dash where a bottle cap or set of keys could easily cause damage to the speakers.

Yes, the boat is outside during the summer, and those speakers on the tower take the sun full force. Winter is really no big deal because the speakers come off and are put in storage.

The sun/heat caused the damage because they are pretty much open-faced speakers. I would worry about keeping them covered/out of direct sunlight when not in use. I wouldn't imagine debris falling into them would cause that much damage as long as it was quickly and carefully removed...
