this is what my shaft seal looks like and it is dripping quite a bit probably about once a second. I would like to try to just tighten it first to see if that slows the dripping, I think I know how but just in case can some one enlighten me on how they do it? (pretty sure I just back off the jam nut tighten the larger nut and then re-tighten the jam nut - small one - back down)

If this doesn't end up working what size packing is used?

I have a 2001 Sanger Sang Air and the shaft is 1 1/8"Upload

your technique description is correct. I believe you will find about 3 wraps of 5/16 flax in there.

Do I need to have the boat in the water to tighten it or can I tighten it a half turn or so and see how it goes?

looks like about an 1 7/8" wrench and 2" wrench for this... folks just use regular wrenches on soft metals like this?

I just use a large channellocks to loosen the jam nut and tighten the packing nut no more than what I can by hand, with my hand, but not even that tight. You want it dripping about once every 10 seconds to provide adequate cooling to the flax.

I do tighten mine while in the water to see how it goes. Shouldn't take much and you don't want it to stop.
