mounting blocks for running wire, etc.

I saw these mounting blocks on the thread "Jason's 209" where Grant was using them to run wire...



What are they made of and where do you get the material?

((I was going to use similair blocks (adhered with Liquid Nails) to mount my LED lights under the gunnel, however I was thinking of using wood and just painting them to protect from moisture.))

Hey dave, They are MDF. You can use what ever you like. plastic, plywood, ect I just painted them. Our boats are kept inside so I wasent realy worryed abut the moisture.


As far as the Liqued nails goes. Im going to have to tell you to try somthing else. Liqued nails has changed. I dont know why but it dosent dry and stick like it used to.

I used a new glue on Jasons boat called Beyond Bond. It was a a 3m product. It woked well. What I would do I I was ou I would go down to your local supply and but a few diffrent types of glue
then cut up some small peices of wood and try out your diffrent types of glue. Mark the peices of wood so you know what glue is what. What ever dry's faster and will stick better is your winner.
Let me know what you came up with. Try the NEW locktight glue that comes in a pressure pack can. Its like squeeze cheeze. Let me know how it works for you

You have the answer in your post. They are MDF that are spray painted in black. The light brown blue that is there is liquid nails but JB weld seems to be working well also. The velcro strap was bought at a local electronics store.

Grant/David, the loctite stuff is power grab. It works really well. Plus when you are done, it screws shut so you can reuse the can really easily.

Jason, cool thank's, Hey have you tryed to take down or remove the loctite, powergrab.

The thing I liked about the Liqued nail's was that if you needed to remove somthing. You could do so with out to much trouble. It was strong enough to hold the amps ect but was not over kill. If you have ever had to remove a amp board with super strong glue you will understand,

Harolds boat had some Epoxy/cement type of glue, holding on a old amp board on. I had to remove it. I had to use a crowbar to get it off, what a pain in the *#$%@

No, I haven't had to remove anything, but I'll glue some wood together right now and try to take it apart tomorrow and let you know.

Jason: thats not realy a good test. Wood to wood is going to be really tough. when you have a big board you can get underneath it and pry it back ect. Trying to pull 2 blocks apart is going to be difficult.

Lots of he time your glueing the board to a un-even surface, so the glue will have to fill the voids and be thick in some spots and still dry.

whats holding the board up is the glue thats squeezed out on the sides and is thin. I have taken boards down that have been up for years and the glue that in the center of the board is still wett?

Grant, I missled you by saying I will glue two blocks together. What I did was take a large curved board and glued a 2x2 board across it. I made sure I used a large bottom board so I can pry the top board off of it. Sorry if I miss-led you.

Dam Grant, I wasn't expecting a homework assignment! lol

MDF, I guess that's what you're using for your speaker boxes...I'm just going to use some pine that I had lying around and put a good coat of paint on it. However, I'm not going to paint the underside of the blocks since I'm pretty sure the adhesive will work better if it's not painted...? I was thinking I'll put a thick bead of adhesive around the outer edge of the underside of the blocks so it will squeeze out around the edges and hopefully that will keep the moisture out. Anyway, that's my theory.

I'm going to use the Liquid Nails since that is what I have available and the lights don't weigh much anyway.

Ok sorry for the delay I got busy and forgot about taking the two pieces apart. The Loctite Power Grab was impossible to pry apart by hand, however when I used a crow bar, they came apart pretty easily.

Hey Jason When you pryed it a part did the wood seem to break up and come apart also.
O did it break off clean?

What should be used to mount amp boards? What's the final verdict?

I think the Loctite stuff works really good, the wood didn't come apart when taking it off and it held really good. It dried to a holding viscosity pretty fast as well. I think it worth a try.

Im going to try the lock tight stuff.
Ill do a test this week. Ill get some and glue a peice of wood to somthing and then when its dry Ill mount some weight to it and see how hold's

The part where it broke clean off in Jasons test is what makes me "not" say go right out and use this stuff.
MDF is real smooth and that what I use for most of my amp boards so I want to see how it hold's with weight. If the glue seeps in the the pours of the wood it makes for a better bond. Some glue's hold real good but if you give them a good tug they break loose. Like a Amp board glued upside down, and mounted to a flexable surface like the side of a hull. But for mounting blocks I can say the Loctite, Im sure it will work great. On the amp bpards the jury is still out. Jason thanks for doing your test.

No prob Grant, the thing that worried me is when I did the peal test (prying the board off the other one) it came off without a lot of effort.

Hey Wake fun. Why dont you do us all a favor. Do the test yourself, Take some photo's and post them here insted of making us do all the R&D. That would be a nice change. LOL

Because you guys said you are already buying the stuff and doing testing, why should we all go buy the same stuff and do the same test?
What do you mean a nice change? I do post all the stuff I do to my boat with pictures and help people all the time, mostly by email.
