I am interested in a 205 from out of State. When the seller sent me engine pictures there is a bit of rust showing in two spots. He says it is surface rust but it got me thinking that maybe the boat has been in Saltwater. The boat is a '98 and I was wondering if a bit of rust is normal for a boat that old. See attached pic...

fro a 10 year old boat that motor looks to be in great shape. I take it you've never seen a boat w/o closed water cooling that's been in saltwater for 10-12 years?

That engine looks normal for several years of freshwater use, and being 10 years old looks really good.

Thanks for the replies on the motor. I have never owned an inboard so I wasn't sure if that little bit of rust was normal or not.

yager97, Yep, went to West Hill with Conley and Olnyk and now play rec hockey with them. Andrew and Ryan sound familiar but can't put a face to their names.

Small world. They are good buddies of mine from school at Sheridan. Conleys girlfriend, Lindsay Morningstar, is my girlfriends old roomate also. don't sweat the rust on that engine, it looks to be in decent shape but if your worried get a compression test done.

Looks good, buy some wd-40 or corrosion-x and spray it down every now and then and it will look like that for 10 more years.

The water pump looks like it might need to be replaced soon. The rust on the bottom and the rust around the timing circle are tell-tale that the weep holes are seeping. It is a cheap quick and easy replacment.

Looks fine to me. About the same amount of rust as my 10 year old engine that is used in saltwater.
