I was at a lake near elsinore on saturday and the temp was 61 in the water.

I think it was 61-62 and by 11am it was blown out. The Channell can stay nice, but you need a pass.

I know there are several launch ramps--is any certain one better or easier?

Tracy- I like using West Marina. It is across from the new high school. Never really a wait during the busiest times of summer. The city launch ramp has the best ramp but it is small and can get crowded quick. West Marina's launch ramp is slippery. That is the only problem there.

the city ramp is also right next to the channel, should you rent out the channel.

I have ridden in the channel once while demoing a boat last year--is it worth the $40/day and insurance paperwork?
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       04-19-2006, 11:49 AM Reply
i think so. if you get everyone to chip in on the daily fee, it's nothing. also, i heard adding california skier to your insurance only raises your insurance by a couple bucks.

there are really only 2 good places to ride in socal; canyon lake and elsinore channel. what sucks is that you have to live at canyon lake or have to be invited to ride there.

I agree--it's a bummer to have to drive 5hrs to find a good place to ride. Do you think the channel is as good as Canyon Lake? I have taken a couple of lessons there and it was pretty nice. I will check on the insurance thing... Any thoughts on the main lake at Elsinore? Is it more windy or just chop from other boats?

the channel can be as good as canyon lake.

the main lake sucks, after 7 in the summer, both from wind chop and boat traffic.

is the main lake decent now in spring or still choppy?

thanks for the info!

Elsinore is green and gross, and cold and windy, and lame, and you get the HIV just from looking at the water. The channel is over rated, and the cops out there give you tickets just for owning a boat!!

In all seriousness though, it is pretty cold still, and the main lake is just about as good as any other main lake is in calli.. terrible. The channel gets rented out fairly quickly, which translates into spending money, and getting only 15 minutes per hour of use. The winter was really the time to get out there, now the traffic is already starting to form, even on the weekdays. Addiditionally, only one side of the channel is really good, and its reserved for skiers, the other side is open to the lake.

is elsinore still full suit weather?
Old     (dcervenka)      Join Date: Sep 2002       04-21-2006, 10:46 AM Reply
Tracy - Just a heads up on the launch ramp by the trailer park (Joe/Ant should know the name.) They charge you $5 (or was it $10?) just to park and then $5/person. silly!

"full suit?" - not if you're riding for the chick flick.. then you're trunking it!

The one Fu is talking about is the West Marina launch ramp.

Anyone know what the city launch ramp charges?
Old     (board2death)      Join Date: Apr 2006       04-21-2006, 1:30 PM Reply
I believe the launch fee at the City ramp is $8
Regardless of where you put your boat in the water, including a shore launch (yes its possible if you're quick) you need a Lake Use Permit which costs $8

hey Joe i was wondering....is lake castaic still around. I remember that back in the day in some vids. How bout Pyramid lake? Is that any good?
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       04-21-2006, 11:29 PM Reply
lake castaic, aka lake mistake, is still around. unfortunately, that lake sucks. it's almost always blown out. pyramid is much better, but finding good water can still be a challenge.
Old     (zride)      Join Date: May 2001       04-21-2006, 11:37 PM Reply
yeah...that sucks. I remember in some old videos...didnt they used to have comps there? I always see pyramid over the grapevine when I drive down to SoCal
Old     (zride)      Join Date: May 2001       04-21-2006, 11:42 PM Reply
damn there gots to be some secret lakes, sloughs, bodies of water that are hidden and unknown in SoCal. Any SoCal riders got any hidden Gems that you would be will to share with fello riders....not weekend warrior, tourists, tubin, jet skier....JK..lol..:-) We will be nice and make sure not to "blow up the spot" I want to try some new lakes, go to some new places, and I am down to hit up some SoCal style ridin if there is something.

they still have comps at castaic, but at the lower lake, which is usually pretty good. unfortunately, the lower lake isn't open to the public.

yeah, pyramid can be seen from the freeway, and can be a nice view. it's deceiving sometimes though. it could look nice and glassy from the freeway, but when you get down to the lake, it's choppy.

oh well, i'm glad i don't have to deal w/ all that...i'm riding canyon lake this weekend.
