Looking to schedule a houseboat trip sometime this year and need some (a lot of) help. Here's the short list....
What lake - we're thinking powell (we're in NE so it's closer than Shasta)
Time of year? - when is it not so busy, but the conditions are still money
What's the best place to rent the houseboat?
Any other tips?

We go every year the 1st week of Oct (part ownership). Water temp is about 73. Air about 80 to 85 or so during the day. School is back in so the crowds are at a minimum. Weather? It's a crap shoot no matter what time of year you go. Summer is monsoons, we get a little rain and last year big winds for 2 of our 8 days we were there. Year before was perfect weather all week long.

Not sure about the rental part. I would say Antelope Point incase the water is low so you're closer to the good parts of the lake. I think their boats are also newer than Wahweep, but I'm not sure. That's a google thing.

Find a good spot and leave the houseboat there for the whole trip. Use your small boats to explore the lake. Driving a houseboat is like driving a blimp. SLOW. It's not cheap on fuel either. When you do park it, tie it down from the sides and the front. We use at least 8 ropes because we've had them snap, come undone, stretch, just about anything that can happen has with us. When the wind does come up, it comes up FAST and hard.

I love that vacation. This will be our 12th year in a row.
