When you are taking out some newbs for the first time boarding, and no one has any experience driving a boat?

do you just dedicate yourself as the driver for the day? What do you do?

Drink plenty of beer and write the day off as far as riding goes.

The responsibility as Captain trumps all fun. Gone through a lot of gas without riding many times. Always made it back alive, though. The only thing worse on the water than a new captain in a boat is one on a jet ski.

If I trust someone enough i will have him drive the boat for a while just cruising around, then I will trhow a life vest over board and have him pretend its a person in the water, most people pick up on it pretty fast.

Take time to show someone or everyone the ropes. Do this and you will find a 2nd driver you can trust to pass the wheel to. Plus if anything ever did happen you have a back up driver just in case.

Driving is not that hard and with a little training, anyone with half a brain can do it.. of course, PP always helps shorten the learning curve :-)

I like to let another person drive while I'm still in the boat and can help instruct them. Then when I feel comfortable with them driving I'll jump in the water.

So we all went out today. I let my good friend take control for a few cruising around the lake. He did a great job so I gave him some basic instructions on speed, easing off the throttle and into it, what speed etc...

I got in the water and he did awesome! got me up on the first shot and kept the speed constant. By my third run he was palying with the trim and making the wake nice and tight. Good to know I now have someone that can pull me when my usual driver isnt with us!

a little instruction and a little more tolerance. I've been out with folks and I teach them enough to pull me safely. If I'm not riding, I'll always take back the helm. Most people do pretty well.
