I'm building a box for a JL 12w3v2-D2 and I just wanted somebody to double check my math before I started cutting. I will be using 3/4" MDF with a double thick front panel.

According to JL's website the 12w3v2-D2 in a sealed enclosure requires 1.25 cu/ft. (23x14x10).

I'd like to build my box in the dimension of 16(high) x 16(wide) x 8.5(deep)

According to Crutchfield's website, to obtain volume, you multiply (height x width x depth) then divide by 1728.

This is where I got my measurements from:

(16 x 16 x (X)) / 1728 = 1.25

256(X) / 1728 = 1.25

256(X) = 2160

X = 8.4375

Inputs?

looks good, keep in mind these are your inside the box #s. add thickness of your mdf for outside. 17.50 " high, 17.50" wide and 10.75" deep

Don't forget to subtract the volume of your driver.

The JL website takes into account the volume of your driver. the size listed is with the sub installed.

According to the jl website your box will be a little small.

23x14x10=3220 (jl site)
16x16x8.5=2176

I woudl think your number should be equal to or greater.

Adam,
That's exactly what I thought too, but JL's measurements don't jive with the formula. So either the formula is incorrect, or JL's numbers are incorrect?

23x14x10=3220 / 1728 = 1.863 cu/ft

Guess I should just call them.

Here's an easy calculator that takes into account the thickness of the material being used. It also calculates odd shaped designs as well. Click the link and scroll down a little...

Here is how the volume is calculated on the JL website the box is 14x10x23. The material is 3/4" thick so you have to subtract each measurement by 1.5" to give you 12.5x8.5x21.5 which = 2284.375/1728=1.32 subtract the driver .07 = 1.25

So your inside dimensions would be good...except you would be a hair small cuz the driver displacement.
