It was a nice windy day, but not too cold for middle of winter!

Paula going for the grab

Nice pics Bill! What cam are you using? The quality's amazing!

I see Paula is back to de-hydrating herself, wearing a drysuit. and another board, how many do you want, hahaha (good choice, my next board is going to be a team)
Geoff, glad to see the knee is healing fine, so how did you like wakesurfing??
Old     (sdboardr99)      Join Date: Aug 2001       01-23-2004, 1:17 AM Reply
Thanks Joe, it's a Canon Digital Rebel SLR. I'm really happy with the quality of the pics. If you haven't checked out the Ricky G photo gallery you should, some of those pics came out really well.

Bill is that with the kit lens on your digital rebel or have you upgraded the lens?

Bill nice pics, if i can tear myself away from work soon we will have to hook up. It is also nice to see that Paula is still alive and kicking by the way what board is she using now!

I like peering at these pics. But I'm ok because there has been good surf. OTHERWISE I WOULD BE SO ENVIOUS!!! Really good pics.
Old     (blabel)      Join Date: Jul 2001       01-23-2004, 10:06 AM Reply
Yeah it's a shame that the good surf months coincide with the time where the boat traffic is relatively low.

Yeah, How do you boys and girls like that 80's style SPRING suit!! I know you like Kristian, fits in with your Euro ways, haha. Your missing out on all of it though man, get your ass over here for summer. Thanks for the pics bill they're awsome, and for the rides.
Old     (sdboardr99)      Join Date: Aug 2001       01-23-2004, 11:26 AM Reply
Brad, those were taken with a 70-200mm f4L lens, definitely an upgrade. I've also used a low-cost 70-300 f5.6 lens and it took some really good pics as well, and you can pick one of those up for about $200.
Old     (blabel)      Join Date: Jul 2001       01-23-2004, 11:29 AM Reply
Bill I forgot to thank you for the advice on the digital camera. We got the model up from your old one for $365 which is less than expected and so far we are really happy with it.
Old     (kristian)      Join Date: Nov 2002       01-23-2004, 11:40 AM Reply
Geoff, add a little Yellow and Pink, and then you'll be cool enough to ride over here
Old     (purana182)      Join Date: Jun 2003       01-23-2004, 12:32 PM Reply
Dude, Kristian, i am sporting the yellow on the knee brace, and i'll just pick up one of the new hot pink premeir's, and keep the neon green wetsuit, so then i'll be set. Hey bill do you think you can email me your choice pics from yesterday, thanks a lot again.
Old     (wakepaula)      Join Date: Jul 2002       01-26-2004, 9:33 PM Reply
Amazing!!
Yeah, Geoff was giving me crap today about the direction of my hand in the first picture. I was going for the MEAT there!!! Or at least trying to anyway.
I'm riding an 04 LF Team now. I can't help it Randy, I gotta try out new boards every so often:-)
Thanks again Bill, you're the BEST!

Bill,

Great pics. Santa gave me a Digital Rebel for Christmas. My action pics have not come out this good. I am still in the learning curve. What mode did you have the camera in for the shots.

Thanks,

Tim

Bill, do you use any type of pod to stabilize the camera while shooting? Those look great. I have trouble keeping riders in frame at this zoom level. And I thought a monopod would help.

Kris,

Dude, it's about time you came around.

In case people didn't notice Paula is performing a new trick in the top picture. It's actually an underhanded wave to the camera, and I believe that since she's the first to do it on film she gets to name that trick.
Old     (kristian)      Join Date: Nov 2002       01-27-2004, 8:08 AM Reply
I was wondering why I couldn't find it in the trick list, so Paula, whats it called?
Old     (wakepaula)      Join Date: Jul 2002       01-27-2004, 9:27 AM Reply
Hmmmm... I like Crotchwaffle. For those that might not be familiar with the term - Crotchwaffles are those crusty things that accumulate between your legs after riding ATV's in the sand all weekend.

Perfect! I hereby name the underhanded wave, to the camera, between the legs trick, the Crotchwaffle.
Old     (wakepaula)      Join Date: Jul 2002       01-27-2004, 9:33 AM Reply
Kris, you changed your quote. HAHAHHAAAAAAA
I love it!
Old    wakeboard_iraq            01-27-2004, 12:57 PM Reply
Crotchwaffle - thats a good one. haha
And that is a pretty good quote Kris.

Bill, did you get that crap all over your boat this time?
Old     (poon)      Join Date: Dec 2001       01-27-2004, 2:14 PM Reply
I also purchased the Canon Rebel 300D and I am really happy with it. Here is a pic of Matt Von Der Ahe that I took with the camera.

Old     (sdboardr99)      Join Date: Aug 2001       01-27-2004, 2:33 PM Reply
Tim, I shoot in Manual mode. I shoot at f4 at 1/1500 or 1/2000 if possible, so I use manual mode with single point (center) autofocus. Once I focus on the rider then I switch the lens to manual focus.

David, I just hand-hold the camera. I sit in the back on the boat since that's the most stable place and it helps if the water is calm. It just takes practice to follow the rider smoothly and hit the shutter at the right time. Using a high shutter speed also makes a difference because you won't get an camera shake.

Arun, do you do any sharpening of your pics in photoshop? I noticed that it makes a huge difference. I don't over do it, but it makes the images much more crisp.

Jim my trailer was covered in the crap when we pulled it out. I posted a pic in the thread that Steve started warning about it.

Here's a couple more pics of Geoff surfing - picked it up really quickly and looked like he was having fun. (These pics were shot with the Digital Rebel kit lens)

nice pics bill and arun. that camera is amazing.

arun, is matt going for a suitcase grab on a crow or something? and did he paint that absolute?
Old     (poon)      Join Date: Dec 2001       01-28-2004, 5:48 AM Reply
Bill, I have not tried that but I will.... Thanks. I am pretty new to photoshop still.

Chris, Not sure what kind of grab he was going for but the trick was a heelside front to fakie.

Old     (sdboardr99)      Join Date: Aug 2001       01-28-2004, 11:31 AM Reply
Kyle, that's the difference between SoCal and other places where you aren't used to wearing a wetsuit. If you were to paddle out in San Diego wearing boardshorts over a wetsuit the other surfers would laugh and probably kick your ass for being a poser.

If you dont want anyone making fun of your neon shorty, wear some cut-off blue jeans instead of board shorts. they will make neon will just melt away.

And lots more pics from today, including some wakesurfing pics of Evan who is another wakesurfing convert - picked it up really quickly since he's a surfer, and had a blast. Todd also made a guest appearance at San V today after his class at SDSU was cancelled.

Nice!

BILL,THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SUCH A GREAT DAY! YOU'RE TOO MUCH:-)

I can't help but reflect on Evan's comment after watching Todd ride today...about the difference between knowing a rocket can take off towards the outer limits and actually witnessing it.

TRUE...Todd you're the ROCKET MAN!!!:-)
Today was a great day:-)

Randy, Todd was riding my board. Didn't like it much but he still managed to go big. I've never seen my board do so many tricks - hopefully now I'll be able to do them now that the board has learned how

We need to get you out there to shoot some pics, and I want to shoot some MX pics too.

It is also good to see Todd riding again

Well since my wakesurfing has become an awkward discussion about how I look on the internet i thought i would give you all a funny pose to laugh about, i am sure you all know which pic i am talking about. But i do have to give thanks to paula for her concern over the matter and weather the pics give me "justice" or not. But the rest of you, go ahead, laugh it up! I am here to entertain.......... And BRING BACK THE EIGHTIES BABY!!!!

Joe, it's more like a 90
Old     (wakepaula)      Join Date: Jul 2002       01-30-2004, 12:16 PM Reply
Yeah, but I've only managed to land a few of those.
Last summer on our houseboat trip I thought I had finally mastered them, I was riding everyday, two to three sets a day, landing most of them and now....well, I keep trying:-)

How true that is! I don't commit to the whole rotation.

Randy the track was fun. A bit over my head but I think once I get used to riding the harpack again I will get better. I was a kook out there especially in the beginning. But I was definitely a lot faster towards the end of the day. I took a couple of picks of the guy that runs the track. Can you say whip? It felt good to get out there. Don't think Sunday is going to happen but you never know.

Bill,

Nice pix! How's the water re: fire. I think it was you last month indicating there was black scum floating in the water and would leave a nasty film on the hull? Your pix reflect nice water - looks d____ cold though!!
