QUICK TOWING QUESTION?????????

I NEED TO PICK UP A 2005 X-STAR IN ARIZONA AND I AM TRAVELING FROM MINNESOTA TO GET IT. I HAVE A 2004 BUICK RAINIER AND A 1999 SILVERADO WITH 200,000 + MILES ON IT. CAN THE RAINIER HANDLE TOWING THAT BOAT BACK FROM THAT DISTANCE. THE RAINIER IS A INLINE 6. SILVERADO IS THE 5.3. MY WIFE HATES THE SEATS IN MY TRUCK AND SO FOR HER COMFORT THERE AND BACK AND MY SANITY, WILL THE RAINIER HANDLE IT OR SHOULD I TAKE THE TRUCK. LET ME KNOW ASAP. THANKS FOR THE IMPUT

id take the truck. the mountians will be brutal

I have a TB with the inline 6......take the truck. The 6 is a good motor, but it can't handle that without some serious strain.

For the sake of your own sanity as well as you're marriage, you might consider getting a price quote to get it shipped. I wouldnt want to tow cross-country with a 200k mile truck or a ranier.

yeah it could maybe cost you like 1 500$ to make it deliver to your door, but more than your x-star if she divorced !!!

NO way i would tow it with the rainer. Even if its rated to tow it, it won't handle that weight well.

The Silverado is much better equiped to handle the weight. Might not be a quick tow over the mountains, but will be WAY Safer.

Or rent a SUV....just make sure there are no milage restrictions.

Fly to Arizona and rent a truck to tow it back. No way I would tow with the rainer

I think you are overloaded in the Ranier. Maybe have your wife fly out for the trip back in the truck.

Fly to AZ rent a Full size pick up or SUV and tow it home with that and drop it off and you are set. YOu don't take the 35cents a mile hit on your vehicle either.

I agree. Fly there and rent a vehicle. Much better and really it wont be that much more expensive.

I say drive your truck out, no way you are losing 35 cents a mile value if its got 200k+ on it.

Try and find a buddy with a diesel, or rent one. It will mkae it easier.

It doesent matter what they does not hurt them it still has the hitch and all the nesesities you need.

I think most rental places don't even put a hitch on their rental SUVs/Trucks. I'm pretty sure they intend their vehicles not to be used to tow. I could be wrong tho...

your right, rental places order suv's with out or take off the tow hitches. and most charge a lot to drop off to a different location.

how bout take the truck and leave the wife at home.

I was going to do that a few years back. It is impossible to find a rental place with a hitch on a truck or SUV. And dont even think about putting a ball on the bumper..

By the time you pay for gas in what ever vehicle you rent plus the cost of renting the truck or suv plus your time spent driving (you could work those days instead of driving to help pay for the shipping) you will probably be about what it would cost to have it shipped. I personally don't think a few hundred dollars saved is worth a long trip which could be even longer if you take your truck or the rainer and something happens. Just giving you my opinion. Good luck

I rented a chevy Trailblazer (which came with a class IV hitch) from Alamo rent a car in San Fran. and drove it to Houston towing my 2006 Supreme V220, it was $380 for the rental one way (2000 miles) and around another $400 for gas and 3 nights lodging.
Yeah the rental companies don't allow towing but who's going to know?? Do your research on which rental companies use Chevy, they come from the factory with the hitch! Also don't rent from the airport locations, that will double your rental cost.

Watch out, if you wreck or blow up while using a rental for towing you are going to need to foot the entire bill.

A better way to go is get a one way U-Haul or Budget truck. They are rated for towing and usually way cheaper than any vehicle rental. Especially if they need trucks in your area. I pulled this trick from Fresno to Seattle. Flew first class on miles down and then pulled back with the U-Haul. Worked great, although the blind spots can be tricky until you get used to it. The best part is its totally legit so no insurance worries and with the new soft ride trucks it was surprisingly comfortable.

Chevy Trailblazer wont handle the MC that well. I have a 06 x-star and tow with a 2002 dodge ram 1500 with a shell on the back and I put airbags on it so it would not sag. You also need stopping power so get a big truck with big brakes for hills.

Yeah the trialblazer didn't just haul as# through the mountains, however it got it done for half of what it would cost to ship. My boat and tandem trailer weight in at 4800Lbs, add some gas and your close to 5000Lbs. I had no problem stopping with the trilablazer. You could always rent a suburban for a few bucks more.

No Air, I looked at U haul and budget trucks because I was worried about the liability of using a rental truck, but they wanted over a grand one way to Texas, so I took the risk with the rented SUV.
