marathon Florida

Hey everybody-
I will be heading to Marathon Florida the weekend of May 11. Does anybody know of any places that I will be able to go wakeboarding in the near vicinity. I know the Tige Pro Am was there last year but I am not sure whether the whole event was brought in or if a local camp or something put it together.

I asked the same question about two years ago and was directed to Hawk's Cay Resort. Its about 9 miles from Marathon. We had a great time, even saw a dolphin. FYI: Salt water rides different.

We go to the Keys a few times a year, and the trick is finding a area protected from the wind- usually bayside rather than ocean side as usually the winds are from the east.

I assume you are bringing a boat? Hawks Cay is a good place to start, I agree with Jeff. Riding in the Keys is like most places, there are just more locations that will have glass due to wind direction and the various mangrove canals. Buy a map with depths indicated, check wind direction in the morning and go out and have a blast - riding in the Keys is very cool.
Oh, and stop at the Key Largo Coffee House on your way down. Its at MM 100.5 in Key Largo -across from Wafflehouse. Thats my family's place, great food.

Ted's right about having a map! That or someone who knows the area well. The potential for trouble is there as the water is deceptively shallow. Last time I looked at a map of the bay, I was amazed how shallow all the way across to the mainland. Reefs, sandbars... even watch out for posts sticking out of the water that were sheared off when Wilma went through there 2 seasons ago!

brought my board down there to ride, the wind was out of the west all week and both the gulf and the ocean were rough!check the weather before you go

The winds start to lay down in the Keys (and Florida)in May. Ive been going to the Keys late May early June for the last 15 years - we dive three miles offshore on the reefs around the end of May and it's like jumping into a pool.
