Getting rid of my D90 that I have had for all of two months. Again, I'd like to thank innovation for coming out with ground breaking products one week after I buy something.
Ordering a 7D this week. The camera comes with a 28-135mm IS lens. I shoot mainly portrait and product stuff so no need for a 200 or 300mm yet. I do want to snag a 10-22mm though.
Question is this. Are these the highest quality Canon lenses? I am new to Canon and don't know their products. I could search Google and find out, however every time my wife sees me shopping for camera stuff she threatens to hit me with a sledgehammer.

The 28-135 IS isn't one of Canons "highest" quality lenses, but it's still a great lens to have. I bought it just over a year ago and still use it some even though I have a couple of L lenses now. Considering you do portraits, I don't think you dislike this lens starting out with and then just save up for newer glass that's a little better. The IS is nice at times too.

Take a look at the "what's in your bag" thread... you will get an idea of what most are using on their 30/40/50d's, which are the same 1.6x crop as the 7d.

After reading about every photography thread on here... The lenses you will hear the most about are:
- Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L or the Canon 24-105mm f/4L for general purpose
- Canon 70-200mm f/4L or Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L as a good telephoto lens.

One lens that not many on here have, but I just bought and love, is the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens. It's expensive for non-L build, but image quality is very, very good, and it covers a nice range on a crop body camera. I went with the 17-55mm f/2.8 because I have found that there are times when 24mm is not wide enough, and having fast glass at f/2.8, combined with IS, was very attractive to me because 99% of my photos are handheld -- and I wanted a lense that would perform well indoors with low light.

The more pixels, the more the IQ of the lens is stressed. The 7D has more then any other 1.6X crop sensor at this point and it really shows. I think having IS on every lens, even a wider one like the 17-55 is very helpful as even smaller camera movements are affected somewhat by the shear number of pixels. I'm certainly noticing that. Basically anything with an L is usually good!

Here is a shot with the new 100 L Macro IS (which is one sharp mofo) on the 7D and it's just wonderful with the new Canon 3D IS. It really helps when you stop it down and get it up close.

Hey Rich, what do you use and how do you use it to get your photos on here in that size while keeping under the maximum file requirements?

Travis: yep it's h264, many are transcoding to prores422 for editing. I haven't shot any video yet, it's just too hard to handle the cam without some sort of rig and an eyepiece (of which I have both on order.)

That's a RAW photo converted to a dng file and processed in Aperture with no adjustments just the standard Apple dng conversion. Once Aperture supports the 7D the RAW conversions will get better.

I export a jpeg via Aperture limiting the pixel size to 1000 either way and set the quality between 3 and 6 depending on the shot to keep it under 150kb.

hmmm, i think i will have to play with one and test it out first. Shoots a nice pic though. That Genus set up looks cool, seems like some options are there for it.

Just picked up the 100 macro too!! Great lens!! Love it for my ring shots.

I've not messed with the 17-55 but I have the 24-70, and it's on my camera the majority of the time.

Rich-

How is the AF on the 7D? Is it as good as the 1D series?

Ended up with the 24-105mm f/4L. Now I don't have an excuse for a bad shot..
Thanks for all the ideas.

It was consistantly backfocusing on most of my lenses. I had to adjust all of them except the new 100 macro. As soon as I can shoot some more I'll see if I'm getting sharper images. It seems to track pretty well.
