Carbon Fiber Cup Holder- "Cup Holders!"

If that makes sence. LOL These are the holders that will hold the Carbon Fiber cup holders's. Are you confused?
Lets see a picture is worth a thousand word's. I guess that why I like Playboy.
Here is a Picture of the Cup Holder Cup Holder.

I took of the factory vinyl and fiberglased and resin coverd them.

Then I did a 2'nd round of fiberglass and resin

Here is a picture of the carbon Fiber cup holders I got from Mike @ Figg's

Im gonna drop the LED pucks in to the bottom of these cup holders and then do the plexy LED rings around the out side of the cup holders like this

Bruce Mac: Pretty much no white trash beer lights up. Coor's, Bud, Pap's, I could go on but why! LOL
Round #3 with the fiberglass and resin. These things should be pretty strong when Im finished. They pretty much fell apart in my hands when I took the vinyl off. I guess that motor put's off some heet! Man they look ulgy @ this point

Ok a bit more progress. I sanded down the holders one more time.

Now Ill resin them one more time. This time I add black die to the resin and cover the part. This is so when I wrap the carbon around the cup holders if you happen to see threw the weave you wont see somthing.
This is what they look like in Black resin. When you add the die to the resin it takes a bit longer for it to dry.

I wrapped them and I had good luck with 1 and not so good with the other. I had to re-do the one on the left that's why it's not as smooth as the one on the left.

i wished you lived in portland so we could see all this crazy sh*t you do first hand......

They look incredible... Very very cool.

How are you going to mount them now? Seems like it'd be a real shame to drill them and use screws.. can you glue bolts to the back side then use nuts to hold them in place?

Mike I got the Carbon Fiber cup holders from Mike @ Figg's You can get regular plastic one's at pretty much any marine store
I had theses led from my old cupholders

So when is Grant going to actually starting selling some of this stuff? Seems like the people with the skill never want to make money at it - which I understand it's for you, but damn, it's like not panning for Gold standing on top of a mine!

Grant would probably be happy to make anything you guys want. His shop rate should be around $120/hour (he is in California). I think he has between 6-10 hours into these two items. If you have $1200 for 2 cupholders, my guess is that Grant would be happy to build them for you?

I think the point here is that Grant is giving you inspiration to try something new, try to build something for your boat. He surely has inspired me to step it up a notch when it comes to doing things on my boat.

Im done with trying to sell anything anyone. I simply can't make items for what people seem to think they are worth. The reason I started making stuff myself is because I wanted all the cool stuff but couldn't afford to pay some one to make it for me. Here's a good example. Mike at Figg's posted some picks and info about the carbon fiber cup holders here on W/W some time ago. It looked like there was some people intrested in getting some until he told people the cup holders were $50 each. From that point the thread was dead LOL
I guess people liked them but not for $50 each LOL.
I know what it takes to make stuff and had no problem paying for the cup holders I contacted him and waited and waited and was very happy when they showed up. I knew he was making them just for the hell of it and if he could get a few dollars in the process then great I guess your more understanding when you know what it takes. Try doing business like that here on W/W you would have some guy calling you out saying. "This guy is making a killing and he is taking for ever bla bla bla" LOL

Hey G, I agree. And just for the record, I never mentioned being cheap or not willing to pay for someone's time. I think there was a bit of an assumption on some people's parts, as they congratulate your response. But yeah, I get it. Someone always wants something for free or a discount on your time. Believe you-me, I know it better than you think. That said, yeah $50 cup holders just isn't good timing right now for most...I always appreciate your work and admire your passion and tenacity to figure things out.

And for the people that say, "just try it yourself", is actually taking away from G and those alike, with there efforts as if what they're doing is like "snap" that easy...

Mark: Yea I know you weren't being a low baller or anything I was just talking about my past experiences with other people. And I say, "Try it yourself" That's how I got started its not that hard. You just have to be willing to fail a bunch of times. Or just do lots or research and learn about all the pitfalls. There is so much information out there that you can pretty much find Step BY Step instruction's on what ever subject you might be interested in doing. I found out lots of information about Carbon and lay-up on a Kayak forum. Yes there is web sights and forum’s, Just like here in W/W where you can find out about anything. Yes you have to take the time to learn about it and try it yourself and a frustrating learning curve but if you have some time and feel like learning then it’s out there.

BTW there are people in the Wakesurfing Fourm that are doing some AWESOME vacume bagging and surfboard building that could help you with layup and building?

Mark, I didn't assume that at all, in fact in reading your post I didn't see that at all. I was merely echoing his sentiment that generally speaking in these current times everybody wants to rip whatever they might be buying.

Hey Grant I have an idea for something you might want to make for your ride. You know those plastic cups that are screwed into the hull, sit below the swim platform and cover the lift rings? I know CC has been using them for years and the plastic ones aren't worth a crap. They break on me all the time and I've thought about making some out of fiberglass myself. Maybe even paint to match my gelcoat.

Yea that would be a great part to make a mold for and sell. I could see selling more than 1 or 2. Thas a pretty part to make. Let me know if you would be intrested in make them in Carbon.

Grant, those came out great. I know personally how long the finish work took on those two pieces. It makes me happy to see the cup holders in happy home. Just a little background on my company, I make the things that I never say offered for sale, but that I wanted to buy personally. The cup holders I made initially were for my 1988 ski supreme and the ones I made for Grant where based on a stainless steel version from overtons. My company site is www.figsengineering.com and its mostly lexus parts (again, that is what I own and want to make parts for.) The shown cup holders are aerospace process, which means the material is prepreg (already has resin sputtered into it when its woven) and then cured in an autoclave at 400 degrees or so. The energy taken to make them is extensive and at $50 I am not making much haha.

If anyone else is interested, just let me know. It may be a while to get them out as I piggyback on other composites manufacture that makes money, but I am more than happy to do it. My main email is fig@figsprops.com.

Back from Vacation I got the plex rings back from Tri City Plastic's in Freemont. They will make them for you for $20 each ask for Brian. They did a great job. They even sandblasted them so they filter the light real nice.

Those rings look great. I wish I had the space to have fat rings like that on my boat. 8 out of the 10 cupholders on my boat are right on top of each other, so the rings cannot extend past the cupholder lip.

Can I get the information for the plastic rings? I have some LED lights left over that I installed in a customers house and would like to put them in my boat. I called a company in Texas and they wanted $175.00 per ring with lights assembled.

I think I gound it. Is it located in Newmark, Calif. I google the name and tons of plastic surgeons names came up. I don't think they want to make plastic rings for me. HAHAHA.

He said it would be BEST if you could send in your Cup and a sample piece of the LED strip. My cup holders are a odd size. I know each boat brand might have a slightly diffrent size cup holeder. IMO I wouldn't just send Brian the O.D of your cup holder and hope that when it's all finished its ok. Brian having your cup holder and LED strip will insure you get the perfict fit.

Tri City has a big Yellow and Black sign in the back of the shop that says. "A error on your part does not equal a emergency on ours"

Grant, where did you purchase your LED's and did you get the waterproof one's?

I think that's almost one of the best sayings I have ever heard. I need to make one of those signs. haha

Just google LED strips and you will find links to lots of suppliers. You don't need waterproof.

Other than an autoclave what else could possibly cost so much? I would assume to make what you have pictured from scratch (consumable materials alone) it would be around 300-400 bucks?
