puting video on internet

i have a didgital video recorder and a editing program but im not sure how to put a video clip on the internet cuz i want to put it in trick tips so they can see what im doing wrong thanks

A few questions for you if you don't mind...
1. Does it have to start out as an AVI
2. I have an old HI8 camera and use an ATI All In Wonder Card. I've been importing the video in as an MPEG1. Should I be doing it as an avi?

Tim,

I think the main thing to remember is that the less compression you can do at capture time, the better your end result will be. If you're not going to edit anything, it's fine to capture straight to MPEG but if you're going to edit, you want the highest quality source available. Simply put, capture whatever format makes the biggest files, up to the maximum resolution of the original source, i.e. there no need to capture from Hi8 at 720x480 or something like that (I don't even know if that's an option).

Does it matter what file type I bring it in at? Does the compression work better if it's avi or mpeg?

First rule of compression is that you don't want to compress compressed footage.... Of course you can do it, but it may not turn out well.

Like Salmon T said, it's best to start with an .avi file. So YES, it does matter.

what compression codec are you guys using? divx is good, but not many people have it.

Currently Window Media 8/9. The nice thing about the Window Media Codec is that the Encoder is FREE.

However we'll be adding QuickTime versions of our videos soon (QuickTime allows you to stop the video and go frame by frame where Windows Media does not...). The only catch is that for the QuickTime or real player formats you'll have to pay for the encoder. Unless of course you already have Premiere or a similar editing program that comes with the codec, but then you will not have full control and most of the time the pre-sets don't cut it...
