Grant , I guess to clarify, I have alt. whine as well as all kinds of noises ( high pitched tone, relay's clicking, pulsing sounds) when I turn the key to the acc. position ( boat not running) . I haev totally isolated my stereo system---all power/grounds/switched power..everything back to one battery not even connected to the starter/engine block...still get the same noises.

Like mentioned earlier, I get noise thru a portable am/fm radio if you set it in my engine compartment.

When I first installed everything I had no nosie issues the way it was wired, then took it in for my 20/50 hour service and now I have all these issues.

Grant, I've had the whole system re-wired twice by two different shops. So it's not just my handy work.

And I never had any issues with noise with the wiring in my old boat

Have you tried to disconnect ALL wires from the alternator and then start the engine?

This would tell you if the noise is induced from the alternator. You could almost go so far as to remove the belt and get a shorter one to bypass the alternator all together.

This is all assuming that you only get the noise when the engine is running.

The wiring is very similar to this , I have since switched amps but the wiring stayed virutally the same, with the exception that all power wire was moved behind the amp board/rack.

This system also HAD no noise....everything looked identical when I recieved my boat back from service but with the horrible noise.

With your little radio, you can also see if the noise gets louder as you move around the engine compartment. Kind of use it like a stethoscope to see where the noise is the loudest and that component is what is most likely creating the noise.

BTW...I met you the other day at the island at Conroe. I was in the '03 Sante tied up with David that one afternoon with the 30 lifejackets inbetween our boats.

Yo what's up Brandon...

Adam, I agree with Grant. Just pull everything out and put in about a half dozen of the Digital Designs monster 12" subs getting about 2000 watts a piece. Upgrade to a 500 amp alternator and put in 5 pairs of 6v golf cart batteries.

Your only problem at that point would be melting the gel coat off the sides of the boat from the sheer volume.

brandon - where are the pics of the lifejackets all attached between our boats? That was funny as hell.

Just got back from a trip to the stereo shop where my boat is at now. I think they figured it out. It doesn’t’ make sense to me, but at this point I don’t care as long as the noise is gone. The head unit is bad, and is introducing noise. The reason I missed along with everyone else is whenever I disconnected the HU RCA’s from the eq’s and ran an ipod thru my eq’s to the amps and still got noise I never disconnected the power/ground wires to the HU, just turned it off. I did the same thing when I ran RCA’s from a friends trucks HU to my eq’s. A few posts up…I swapped out HU’s…for another kenwood straight out of the box, identical to mine, and got the same noise. I never tried any other brand. This shop swapped it out using an alpine and eclipse deck and the noise almost completely went away. Or at least to the point I can’t hear it. The tech on the boat said he could hear a faint tone if he got his ear right up on my speakers. That noise had already probably been there the whole time, who knows????

What I don’t; get is why switching to a different brand of deck did this? After all my boat stereo worked flawlessly for the first two months using the kenwood deck?

no idea why... if you wanted to get techie.... i would suspect it is a impedence mismatch.

if you hear a faint tone with your ear up to the speaker then you have succeeded.

but why would it all of the sudden stop working the impedance didn't change overnite...it worked fine for two months.

dieodes are bad in the alt.

I say you just take the belt assuming not serpentine off of the alternator or disconnect and see if it goes away. That would prove/disprove shane's theory.

It does it even with the motor off. I heard it on Friday. Adam sold me a sub for my boat. He made me a good deal. Thanks again Adam.

I haven't read this whole thread. But...

What HU did you end up with? some head units have some noise reduction built into them. My Eclipse had one. Talk to the shop about using an eclipse deck.

oh yea.. my truck started doing that crap a few months ago. my sub was acting up too. the shop stuck a signal converter on a door speaker and all that crap came loose. speaker wires grounded out on the metal. if any of your mids/highs have been touched, i would look at them too.

I did not read this whole saga, but I have seen a bad alt (dieodes leaking) cause some f-ed up things to go wrong with stuff like this. it's always the simple things. one more thing, be sure all your ground cables are making good conections. check and recheck

Is the alternator a stock alternator or aftermarket?
