Anyone ride there or a lake close to it?
Old     (mjmurphy53711)      Join Date: Mar 2004       09-29-2006, 8:31 PM Reply
What do you mean "or a lake close to it"

That would depend on what side of the lake you are on, and define "close".

Tahoe is glass somedays, and a lot of mornings...but its cold always and rough a lot of the time.

Also, things change fast there, be careful.

Yeah, that lake never really gets above 65 degrees if it even gets there! Not really a wakeboard mecca like a lot of people think. Lahontan Reservoir is going to be the warmest water on the Nevada side. Its about an hour and a half east on 50. Its referred to as the mud hole by us locals for obvious reasons. Boca and Stampede are the closest lakes, about a half hour from North Tahoe. Also cold water.

Check out Fallen Leaf lake. It is on the southwest side of tahoe.

I'm moving to north tahoe this winter. I don't know much about it, but I do know that by spring I am going to be itching to wakeboard. Snowboarding should hold me over. Anybody want to show me around a little bit. I have a lot of gas money and used to own a boat so I have driving and trailering skillz too.

Where are you moving?

Im moving to Truckee in January, the delta is ridable/dry suitable year round if you are willing to drive a couple hours.

If your in North Tahoe you will be riding at Boca/Stampede, in the spring.

Please. Donner = the goods. Scott, please, push him to Jackson or Stampede. Don't give away Donner. That is not so cool.

I am the Boca pirate. Come with your trailer and leave with only an image of me sticking a roll-to-revert off the dub in front of you, and then your hubcabs are gone. That's no good....

Ahhhh, come on guys. I need to know the good spots. Don't hate. I don't do power turns and am a good guy to hang with. Plus, I am probably going to buy a super air while I'm up there. I'd like to meet up with a couple people and ride while I'm there. I'm not sure where I am moving exactly. I am going to be working at diamond peak at incline village.

A buddy used to work for them in the rental shop, I must have ridden there over 70 times in winter of 94'. That resort has the best view of the lake from a run IMO. have fun. Donner is definately a cool looking lake,I have never had an chance to ride there though.
Old     (guido)      Join Date: Jul 2002       10-02-2006, 4:03 PM Reply
Yo' Jeremy.... You're moving to the right place bro. There's no way you're gonna get straight answers on a forum like this though. It's like asking the locals to tell the world where the pow stash is. Let us know when you move up and you'll quickly be hooked up with a cool group of riders that are willing to share the secrets.

Definitely get used to the cold water though. It rarely gets to comfortable status. If you're looking for warm, killer water then you'll have to head down the hill.

How cold is cold? Just curious of what temp it is. Here is texas I ride on a lake that is close to a damn and it is pretty cold (usually around 59 where I keep my boat. It warms up down river.

I want to definitely meet up with you guys.
Old     (guido)      Join Date: Jul 2002       10-03-2006, 10:10 AM Reply
Totally depends on the time of year. The delta ranges from around 45 during the winter to the high nineties in the summer. Lakes in the Sierras will go from frozen over to the mid seventies during the summer.

Jeremy, curiously, why Diamond Peak?
Old     (crowmobe540)      Join Date: Mar 2004       10-04-2006, 11:17 AM Reply
Not sure really. Is there a better place to be. I know heavenly is more popular, but I was hoping diamond peak would be less crowded. What's your input
Old     (dakid)      Join Date: Feb 2001       10-04-2006, 12:04 PM Reply
when we filmed out at donner in july, at 5am, water temp was in the mid 60s and air temp of 39.
Old     (mjmurphy53711)      Join Date: Mar 2004       10-04-2006, 1:03 PM Reply
Well Heavenly is in South Lake, about an hour from Incline Village.

Within 20 minutes from Incline you have Northstar, Alpine Meadows, and Squaw Valley.

Northstar is for park/groomers only really.

Alpine Meadows has awesome big mountain and a perfect advanced park if your into going big.

Squaw is the ish, plain and simple, but the pass is 1799 dollars.

Joe, you filmed on Donner Lake? Its almost always windblown, but when it looks nice it looks real nice.

Bet you pissed off the sailboats too haha.
Old     (brhanley)      Join Date: Jun 2001       10-04-2006, 1:56 PM Reply
Passes are free at the mountain where you work (even Squaw), but they take it out of you by not paying well. Diamond Peak is not really a "big" mountain, but can be fun depending on your abilities. If you plan on riding more than 15-20 days and pushing yourself (hucking cliffs, charging steeps, etc.), I would look into working at Alpine, Squaw, or Sugar Bowl (Sugar Bowl is not close to Incline so only there if you're not tied to living in Incline). I spent four years at Squaw working four different jobs in the mid to late 90's so I can give you some ideas of the plusses/minusses of different mountain jobs if you want to shoot me an email. Jobs should be super easy to come by this time of year (not to start now, but in December)....
Old     (mjmurphy53711)      Join Date: Mar 2004       10-04-2006, 2:35 PM Reply
Brian, whats up with working at Squaw?

I heard that to get a free pass you have to work 40 hours a week, a bit defeating if you ask me, but Im not sure if its accurate.
Old     (brhanley)      Join Date: Jun 2001       10-04-2006, 3:28 PM Reply
I believe you have to work at least 3 days per week on average, not necessarily tied to hours unless you work really low hours. In the old days, I knew people that worked 20 days per season and got passes. They cracked down on that after awhile, but there are still exceptions made for special circumstances/old timers. In all the time I worked at Squaw, I probably only cracked 40 hours a couple times in the first year I worked there.

Mike, probably not too many sailboats on Donner at 5am. LOL

Joe, Brrrrr!!!! 39 degree air temp? Brrrrr!!!!

Duh, I missed that part of his post lol. Donner has a big sailboat yachting crowd.

I think Donner would be a great place to ride, scenic wise....Ill look forward to checkin that in the chick flick.

Mt. rose is right by incline village too and has way better riding IMO. If you are going to be living in incline, I would check it out before diamond peak. Incline is a great place to be.

Mt. Rose is in RENO.

Northstar and Alpine Meadows/Squaw are both about ten miles from Incline Village.

If you were only going to live in Incline for working at Diamond Peak, you might want to check into Kings Beach, a lot cheaper and 3-4 miles closer.

Incline has the only casinos on the North Shore, and a lot of money.

I cant knock Diamond Peak because Ive never rode there, but it does seem to be somewhat of a tourist destination, certainly not known for their park if thats what your into.

Ill be living in Truckee after January 1st, maybe we can ride......even better....maybe we can carpool down the hill and hook up with Evan and crew for a Pull.

mt rose is a loooooooooong ass cross country ski run to incline village!

Ive been to Mt. rose....I suppose technically is in between Reno and the Northshore.

Its definately considered by locals and marketed by the resort to be in Reno though.

And to that note, other than the "chutes" which rock rose sucks. Especially there park.

Its been about 8 years since I was there. I lived in reno and my buddy lived in incline. It seemed about half way between the two. Compared to where I live, a half hour drive to go snowboarding is close. I looked on the map to and it looks to be within 15 miles. Is this wrong?

Guess you are right, but nobody from Incline is driving to Rose! Its considered the resort for Reno's locals.

Thanks for all the infor guys. I don't know where I'm living yet. I just have a job at diamond peak as of right now. I'm flying to tahoe in late october to look for my place. I'll check other stuff out there too. Anybody know of any rental locations near kings beach. I've looked some online, but all I can seem to find is vacation rental stuff. Thanks for the help.

We should definitely hook up while i'm there.

www.sierrasun.com check that out, and craigslist has a ton of stuff under reno.

People also post fliers looking for a roommate at various locations. In Truckee, you can find them at 7-11, the Health Food store, etc. The various ski resorts sometimes have information/fliers too with places for rent. You can also "search" craigslist for Truckee, Kings Beach, Incline, etc. and see what pops up. I know I advertised on there a few years back for a roommate.

Mike, Incline is 10 miles from Alpine? I'd say 10 miles to Norstar, but it's a hike to Squaw or Alpine from there. Probably more like 30 miles over Brockway, then back on 89 or all the way through Tahoe City and back down 89, either way it's a trek.

My plan this winter is to trade off snow and water every weekend (weather permitting). You guys are definitely welcome to come down the hill for a pull.

damn, that does sound good. is there a place where you can wakeboard in the winter. I'm down for cold water riding, but I just didn't know if was even an option up there.
Old     (mjmurphy53711)      Join Date: Mar 2004       10-05-2006, 12:23 PM Reply
Delta, up by Evan.

Alpine is 14 miles from Kings beach, Northstar is about 7 (if I remember right.

I would bet even money that you end up living in Kings Beach, lots of studios and small places for rent, and even more houses full of resort employees up for grabs. Also, its right on Tahoe so provides some good views.

Jeremy, are you into park?
Old     (crowmobe540)      Join Date: Mar 2004       10-06-2006, 6:49 AM Reply
yeah man. what you got for me?
Old     (mjmurphy53711)      Join Date: Mar 2004       10-06-2006, 6:55 AM Reply
If your into park get a pass to nstar but dont ride their on weekends unless you like 40 minute lift lines, during the week its legit.

You can also easily get a job there too, if you arent tied into Diamond Peak. Diamond Peak from what I hear has a marginal park FYI.

Then, for big mountain/pow days/ and HUGE jumps (95 footer last year) get a pass to Alpine Meadows, its 800 bucks and worth every penny.

Then, itll be a good drive from kings beach but lots of folks do it get a 99 dollar night pass to boreal for a dope superpipe and jibs all over.

Here is some pictures of Alpine, and Alpines park.

We might have a room for rent in truckee as well.

Alpines park is small but PERFECT.

Nstars park is very snowboard orientated with random things to jib all over and the park goes on forever.

If you live in Kings Beach these are both within a 20 minute drive for you, and there is shuttles that run from town to the resorts. Email me if you have any questions.

jeremy,Ok So you want good water, lahonton is probably the best warm water you will get this side of the state line. Always a place to ride. beware of the circle turners, and stupid non wakeskating jetskiers, next is boca or stampede. Stay close to the shore line. boat chop gets bad in the middle. Water there is farely warm in the mid summer. Tahoe is Cold year round. Ridable in the mornings... or early eavnings. Its just to big and open to get great water all day. That lake has a mind of its own. Pyramid is also a lake around here but the water sucks. its an alkali lake so it messes with your boats jell coat and has horible water, goes from flat to 3 foot white caps in a snap of a finger. Bullards bar is about two hours minimum from the tahoe basin. that is an epic place to ride. Hit me up if you need mor info

I have been on Donner lake and it is pretty cold water. The lake is small and the wind does come up. I heard Rollins lake is nice, but never been it is real close to Donner. Donner is where I saw the Tomcat MB boat. Both of them Black and Orange. That is where the Photos for MB sport was taken that you see in Wakeboard Mag. Donner Lake is super clear water, but cold.

Mb photo shoots are on donner, Coby live up there, or shoud i say has a house up there. Most riding shots u see in a MB ad is down at hidden lake, a private lake in reno.

Is that the private lake that Glenn Plake lives on? Half hour or so outside of Reno?

I found a place in Incline Village. It is a house off Geraldine. If any of you want to hook up and ride once the snow hits let me know. I am super excited.
