I am looking at getting a new head unit and was hoping for some advice. I really dont know anything about them. I am looking at spending 100 - 150 on them and it seems to me the $150 just look nicer. Is there more to it then that or are there really things i am going to miss by going cheaper. Here is one i like from circuit city and they will install it as part of the deal: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Pioneer-DEHP4000UB-Car-Stereo-DEH-P4000UB/sem/rpsm/oid/201366/catOid/-13089/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do The thing i liked about this one is that you can hook a thumb drive to it as well as an mp3 player. Is that feature worth the extra money from the next one down that is 129 from pioneer: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Pioneer-iPod-Ready-Car-Stereo-DEH-P3000IB/sem/rpsm/oid/203093/catOid/-13089/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do they really pushed pioneer to me, is there another brand i should look at.

I just put this on in my boat. It is a little more than you are what you are looking at but it has worked great for the couple of days I have had it. The thing I like about it is that it is marine and it has the actual ipod interface built into it. It charges and is controlled through the unit. It also has an accessory plug on the front. http://www.xplodsony.com/marine/headunits/CDX-M50IP

Do you need a hardwired remote? I luv my alpine and their new marine line has the hardwired remtoe if it's out. You may pay a bit more for the alpine units but the alpine made a night and day difference in my system vs. my stock kenwood HU

The new marine Alpine HU has the hardwire remote option. They are supposed to be available soon. Right now the only remote that works with the alpine is their wireless remotes.

I can sell you my Sony CDX-F5505X $115 including shipping. You can hook up wired remotes, changer, aux input, etc. It is used, works great. Was installed in my summer driver, which hadn't been driven for 2 years... so this has been doiing nothing.

^^^^Yeah blake i'd also go with that Sony. has iPod controller built in, and is compatible with the RM-X55M transom remotes which are some of the neatest ones available right now...

Do not get Sony. Its pre-out signal clips really bad at about half volume. Pioneer or Alpine are both great choices.

I disagree. Pioneer always has ugly stuff, Alpine only puts out new products every like 10 years.

TJ, not sure if sigmodes meant it was good looking. I for one could car less what the deck looks like. I would rather have a deck that works well and is high quality.

Do searches on whatever model number pioneer you may buy, they had issues with their RCA outs on their radios that caused huge grounding issues. it's a imple fix, but a headache to deal with.

Blake, the preamp outputs of the 3000ib are half the voltage of the one that I posted. If you are going to add any amps they aren't going to receive as good a signal. Also the downfall of the acc. plug on the front is you also have to have a cigarette lighter plug to charge your MP3 player.

Brett, Is the issue of the poor signal coming from the Sony HU resolved with the use of an EQ like the WS420? I would figure it would being that the EQ then receives all the signals from the amps and the HU is simply used at that point to run an Ipod and remotes. However I want to make sure. Thanks.

Ben, I actually have that same question. I know Shane from sigmodes and trust what he has to say. I actually just bought the Sony deck pictured above before I really knew what I was doing. The downfalls are that it only has a front output and sub output. I am wondering if I get a WS420 or similar EQ it doesn't matter what the voltage on the deck preamps are? Also does the WS420 only have one rca in from the deck? I have heard mostly good stuff about the WS420 but do have a buddy that seems to be fairly disappointed with the unit. He says there is a lot of noise heard through it.

Blake, I can't tell what the difference is but the 400UB comes with the IPOD cable and the 4000UB doesn't. If they are the same other than that get the 400UB.

The WS-420 will only amplify the bad signal not improve it. You only need one set of pre-outs from the deck for the 420, as it will only accept one input. It doesn't matter what the voltage out is.

i emailed pioneer and they said the 400 has a 2 year warranty and the 4000 has a 1 year and that is the only difference. the 4000 for 169 with free installation from circuit city is looking like the way to go.

try the sony cdx-gt520. i have an older version. best buy has one similar on sale. just gave this link for an example. the reason why it's better then your mentioned models, imo, because of the "dso" effect besides a sub controller. it seperates the bass from your other speakers (acts like a crossover). i love it!! my tower speakers get the mids and highs and it allows my sub to just bump! i dig this feature and i'm unsure if any other brands have a similiar effect for the price. i just happened to stumble on mine and got lucky. had no clue about it until i messed with the eq's one day after installing a sub. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-HD-Ready-Car-Stereo-CDX-GT520/sem/rpsm/oid/190706/catOid/-13089/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

thanks garold. Maybe i will go with that one. All the reviews go on about how easy it is to use. The pioneer seems to be lacking those compliments. The only thing still pushing me towards the pioneer is the usb option. (Message edited by tings00 on June 06, 2008)

thanks for all your help fellas, i got the sony cdx-gt520 installed yesterday at circuitcity and it sounds great. i still need to mess with all the setiings though. The instruction manual doesnt give many details. It seems like the DSO just offers a 1, 2, or 3 setting nothing you really customize, How do i figure what each option is for the DSO

Just an FYI on Sony. 1. They discontinued the RM-X55M remote. And replaced it with the RM-X11M which does not have LCD readout LAME!!!! 2. I got the new Sony CDX-GT820IP because my iPod adapter was not right. I was told the RM-X55M remote would work with it. And it does. The only issue is that it will control the HU, but only displays IPOD on the screen of the remote. It doesn't display anything else. The kicker, The RM-X55m displays all the Sirius, FM channel, etc. Crutchfield believes this is due to the fact that the new RM-X11M has no display. WTF! I'm done with Sony. Looking at getting the new Alpine but the marine remotes are always on back order. The new MB Quartz stuff looks cool. Has anyone used it yet? I have had Pioneer and the only reason its not in my boat was because of the remote issue. I have 2 remotes and wanted to have the remotes to give the LCD display.
