Holy Sh*t!!! Moby Dick 7 and a switch kgb 5 these kids are getting out of hand. How do you even judge a contest anymore with the tricks these kids are landing.

Now THIS, by comparison to other chat about progression on here lately, is real... and real-ly impressive. Switch kgb 5's, wrapped backside 1080's and moby dick 7's - I mean, think about it... Behind the boat, no frills progression. Our sport. Can not wait to see the video. And congratulations to Phillip.

I wonder what Soven could trade in exchange for the board on which that was landed now. Movin' on UP, Phil

"I wonder what Soven could trade in exchange for the board on which that was landed now"
What does that mean?

Oh - I should have been more clear. I just mean that all these boards on which amazing things have been landed could be sold, auctioned off for charity etc. Can you imagine owning that board? It's kind of like having a championship game ball. But like a rookie keeping a 1st touchdown football, I guess I would keep it and wall mount it. It all depends on what the rider wants and how attached they are to things like that. Sorry for the aside ...and now on with the show. Congratulations Mr. Soven!

Andy, I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to say anything cuz I suck at calling tricks. What makes a trick a mobe? I guess I don't see where the tantrum is in there. Please don't take this as me trying to take away from Phil's trick, cuz it's crazy. I'm just trying to understand how it got named a Moby Dick 7 versus an off-axis 7.
Old     (andy_nintzel)      Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Minnesnowda       08-26-2009, 8:38 AM Reply
Sorry Justin some one had to do it.

HEY DAVID's ON MY SIDE!!! I must be right!

I have this beef actually with a lot of peoples Moby Dicks in general, not this 720 version od Sovens specifically. A lot of people, and I am going to get crap for this, do them out the back (easy to see in some of the jr mens riders where a Mody is in ever contest run) much like what Derek Cook and others would call a HS BS OA 3 or 5. Take a look as AA's Moby its up and over the top. So to be clear I have no beef with this trick, call it what you want, I can't do it, and I think its SICK! Just call them as I see them.
Old     (wakeworld)      Join Date: Jan 1997       08-26-2009, 8:43 AM Reply
Believe me, having me on your side for a trick-naming discussion is probably going to hurt your cause more than it helps. If I can't do the trick, I usually can't call it! :-)

But I agree with you that if a tantrum is supposed to be included in the trick (as is the definition of a Moby Dick), shouldn't the entire board be above the rider's head at some point during the trick? Maybe my definition of a Moby Dick is off, no?

From that shot, it's without a doubt tantrum takeoff.

HSBSOA spins look more like an out-the-back heel front flip to me, which looks nothing like the image above.

Mobe! Look at this shot. His head is completely upside down so I don't see how you can call it a spin. Sure it's out the back but most people throw their mobes like that.

Funny, I suck at figuring out the number of rotations on these types of spins (if you call it an o/a spin), but I was wondering before Andy's post if someone was going to claim this as a 1080. I just watched it a few times and I think there may actually be three rotatations in there (much like the way the crow 7 was debated as an ole 1080, I think there's an ole-type 3 in there and 2 handle pass 3's). Sure seems like there's much more spinning going on than the back 7's you see thrown off the wake.

Perhaps the definition of the trick has migrated since the original Moby Dick. Maybe we can get Keith Kipp to comment. Wasn't he the inventor of that one?
Old     (waterdork88)      Join Date: Aug 2005       08-26-2009, 9:10 AM Reply
its definitely not a bs 7. If you look at the move but subtract the last 360, you'll see a moby dick. Congrats Phil.

I just hope this doesn't become a...

ITS A MOBY DICK 7...

NO ITS A HEELSIDE BS OLE 10!!!

That's kind of what I figured. It's really hard for these tricks to remain black and white when you start adding more twists and turns to them. I'd say that when you have a crew in the boat like that and they call it a Moby 7, then you've pretty much got your definition of a Moby 7! Thanks Chad.

P.S. Also stoked to see that Chad is participating on WakeWorld on a more regular basis! Pros that spend some of their spare time interacting with fans (online, offline or wherever) when they can just as easily be doing something else deserve props!

In my world, the world where people call tricks normal names, that would be a flat 10. now my world is also from a snowboarding background and recently started wakeboarding so please dont kill me for calling that a 10. but he definitely spun 3 times.
Old     (boomshot)      Join Date: Jan 2008       08-26-2009, 10:04 AM Reply
Regarding "I wonder what Soven could trade in exchange for the board on which that was landed now" and the mounting of the board stuff... well I was of course kidding. Anyone who knows anything knows exactly what I was talking about.

As for legit or not - I couldn't do what he is shown doing there no matter what it is. The video quality isn't great and he's spinning like a flipping dervish. It's another debatable one for sure - it wasn't as cut & dry as I had expected. But I'll pass on that debate and just say it's better than any kind of cableplay posted on here this summer.

Boomshot, that's actually an interesting point. The other day we were talking to Rusty about the same thing. He was still riding the board on which he landed the first contest 1080 in Reno, so we got to talking about "retiring" that board and selling it on Ebay or keeping it as a trophy. Of course, Rusty thought the Ebay idea was silly, but I told him that it would fetch a great price in a charity auction, such as the Toys For Tots auction we do every year. Either way, I think he should do like pro football players do with the balls they score with. Mark the game and date on the ball and put it in the collection. Worry about what you're going to do with it later on down the road.

Funny, I watched the movie before scrolling down the page thinking..."I wonder if this will get another Flip vs spin argument" Sure enough it happened. haha.

I wonder when Wakeboarding will embrace the "rodeo" term?
Old     (boomshot)      Join Date: Jan 2008       08-26-2009, 10:52 AM Reply
David - again, I was kidding. It was a red herring. But for Rusty that would make sense. He is a great ambassador to the sport and could do a few charities some good. Harf as well.

Definitely a moby 7 - nothing ole about that. And if it were "ole" it would be a 10, not a bs 7.

first and foremost, congrats on the trick. it's definitely sick and i definitely cannot do it.

with that said, it's my understanding that inverts are classified as tricks in which the board goes over the rider's head (backroll, tantrum, even raley).

i'm not sure i would classify this as an invert.

Frame grabs tell nothing of a trick. I can get a frame grab of a 360 of mine and tell the world its a 1440.... worthless

To get in the position he is in for a few of those there is no way to do it besides a flip.

Eubanks' = clearly a flip
Joe's 2nd one = a position that isn't just an OA spin position, its from a flip rotation... because if thats how you're spinning OA you've got issues.

yeah, but you're not telling people it's an invert.

You know, the more I look at it, the more it looks like he didn't get the board over his head. However, I tend to throw my flips out the back as well (with about 540 degrees of rotation less, of course), so I can see that argument as well. Tough call.
Old     (focker)      Join Date: Aug 2006       08-27-2009, 3:08 AM Reply
Since 90% of people do their "crow mobes" out the back I guess we should just start calling them all ole 720's. I have never seen Tino do his "crow 5" where the board goes over his head. I guess hes been doing ole 900's all these years.

Look people - the differing factor between what constitutes something being ole or an invert is gray, therefore if something is "ole" it needs to be ALMOST ON AXIS so that there is no question. Phil's Moby 7 IS NOWHERE NEAR ON AXIS. Just because it is not straight up and down does not mean it's not an invert. This is unquestionably a moby dick 720. I am really surprised someone of Andy's caliber regarding skill level and involvement in the sport would even bring this into question.

did you want me to write a novel to get 1 point across? and yeah, you need to chill for callin' out andy like that. it's ok for people to question tricks, you know? especially someone of andy's caliber since he knows every trick in the book. questioning something...that's what makes this discussion board work. otherwise, everyone would agree on everything. how fun would that be?

calling him out? I made a statement saying I was surprised about something, are you just trying to rustle up some drama here?

Jeez - you're reminding me of my ex girlfriend as far as blowing things out of proportion goes.

...But back on subject congrats phil - that's two legitimate mobe 7's he has got in his bag. To my knowledge no one else is even doing one.

It is crazy to see the progression that has come about this year. To think almost a decade elapsed after PB hit his 10 in 1999 I think before folks started doing them again and getting it on film. Now you've got guys doing them heelside, toeside, wrapped backside, wake-to-wake, in comps. Awesome year for wakeboarding progression.

Sorry but I really was not trying to deny Soven the glory of landing a Moby 7. I am usually the first guy in the boat to be like, nope that's not a (insert Trick) its a (insert another trick). I am not trying to be a dick, I just call things as I see them. We could debate this to death, the simple fact is that none of us can do it, nor can anyone else for that fact except Phil Soven, so he can call it whatever he wants.

Its cool to kno I have caliber I hope its .44 or above!
