I'm just getting started in the sport and have been using a friends old board to train on and make sure I liked it. His old board is a 136cm and it works great for me. (I am 6'1" but about 150#.) I found a great deal on a 134cm board, but wasn't sure if it would work for me. After reading a bit online, it appears as though the board will handle my weight bracket, but are there any other things I should consider before buying? Are there advantages to having a shorter or longer board?

You'll generally get more pop out of a longer board. With your weight, unless the 134 is really wide, I would go about 136 or higher. You will probably just find it a little easier to ride.

Go bigger, better pop and softer landings, you could ride a 134, but I think you would be happier on a 138, 140 or 141.

i am also 6'1" and i way about 170 and i first started out on a 135 hyperlight and i thought it was good board until i tried my friend davids 139 lyman and the bigger board definetly made things easier to do. so for your height and weight you should be riding a 139

With your height I would say get at least a 140. Really your going to want to make sure that a shorter board is going to allow you to get a stance that is wide enough to be comfortable.

I agree, at least 140. You probably won't lose any weight. A lot of my friends are under 6' and ride 142-144. Bigger board=bigger air and easier landings. As Andy said, the wider stance is also a big consideration.
