Steering question

I've heard different opinions on how easy your boat should turn in the water. I'm trying to figure out if my Prostar needs a new kit or not. Mine takes two hands to turn in the water but its always been that way so I assumed thats how it was. But I've heard several people mention you should be able to turn with your pinky? I have a Steermaster MK III 14ft cable system in a oder prostar so not sure if the older boats just turn like that or if I'm in need of a new set up.

My 89 prostar was easy to turn with a finger or two. If yours is similar you might actually find a grease fitting in the back where the cable hooks to the rudder. Grease it regularly. Could be that's bound up and not your cable. I believe we had to remove the back seat, remove the engine cover and then remove some more screws to get that portion of the floor up. Not difficult.

Do you know if you had the Teleflex or the steermaster set up in your prostar? I took mine to the shop and they said I needed a new kit put on but I don't know if they checked the grease fitting.

I have no idea, sorry. I greased it a few times in the 7yrs I owned it and never had a problem. It's gone now otherwise I'd look.

Steering cables have a limited life due to the moisture in a boat. It is just a matter of time. A healthy cable will turn with one finger. By a "kit" they are talking about the entire cable set up which includes a "head end" that attaches to the steering wheel (it is a long rectangular piece on my old prostar). Do a search and you will find some great advice on how to do the change out easily. You will be amazed you lived with it as long as you have. BTW - it is way too late for grease, your cable is toast.

You can make sure it is your cable by disconnecting both ends and making sure the rudder is in good shape (turns freely) as well as your streering console.
