Allan, I'm about 215 and ride the broadcast 5.6. I surf behind my boat with stock ballast, and a crew of only three, driver, watcher, and surfer. I'm no expert but you might want to go up from the 4.8 to the 5.6.
allan, I went out and bought the 4'9" broadcast this summer and am 220lbs. This was my first board and I have been strugling all year. I am able to let go of the rope but it is quite tough to stay in the pocket for any length of time. I finally used a friends real surf board and was able to surf for as long as I wanted without the rope. I just bought a 5'6" inland and am waiting to try it. So anyway my advice is get the bigger board, you will enjoy it much more.
i disagree, the bigger board may help initially but will hold you back as soon as you learn to surf without the rope. Learn on the smaller broadcast, and eventually you will want to switch to an even smaller skimboard type.....especially if you want to spin.
yes, a bigger board will definitely hold you back and slow your progression. Kinda a rough situation since you want to get a bigger board to learn on, but then you are stuck when you want to progress. I'd say just go for a smaller board from the beginning and you should be good.
