What kind of oil are you supposed to use in Oil Bath Hubs?

The short answer is engine lube oil. I'll check in a day or two if anyone knows better what weight and if detergent or not.

i've heard different answers ranging from 30W motor oil to gear lube.

i use Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 currently

The brochures say to re-tighten the set screws to 15 inch-pounds. Not foot pounds, inch pounds.

Same as brucemac, heard/seen different reccomendations, been using gear lube for the last 3 years with many miles and no issues.

I use 50wt on my mastercraft trailer.

Thanks guys - all the research online is similar to this.....all over the place. I had to use engine oil in a pinch and now I want to change it out. Gear oil seems to make the most sense to me but not sure it really matters. I tow a lot in high heat and want to do the right thing here.

From my UFP

RECOMMENDED LUBRICANT
Use standard 50 weight motor oil. Do not use heavier or lighter weight oils;
variations in oil additives and viscosity can affect oil containment in the GOLD
system.

. However, depending where you live that might be hard to find. I have been using 5w40 with no leaks or extra heat.

50 weight. Trick with the MC ones is to fill them on the floor first, then flip them up and screw it on. Yes you will spill some, but it will be full and take 1/20 the time...

my 2002 UFP hubs call for 50wt per the manual.

For those of you with the Mastercraft spin-on oil bath caps - what do you use to tighten the caps? I have found that hand-tightening is not enough. Any trick?

Ive the the aluminum spin off caps and use a big pair of channel locks, i"ll put a towel around the cap first so the channel locks dont chew them up.....no leaking yet!

09 MC trailer here. How often should you change the oil and hoe do you do it. I check every time and level is good and clear.
