Shaft packing on a v drive. . . . HELP!!!!

I'm pretty sure that the flood of water I get every time I go out is from the shaft packing. It's an 01', and I've never even looked at it.

Well I looked at it today, WTF?

How are you supposed to get at it? Its under the V drive.

Are there any tricks that anyone knows specific to a v drive?

Please help.

there are to opposite running nuts, adjust them a little bit, it needs to make a few drops from time to time still.

They make cheap, though not necessarily inexpensive, for packing nuts. You want two. West Marine and others carry them.
I bought a double open end wrench and cut the middle out to give me two short packing nut wrenches. Somebody with your boat can confirm the wrench size.

They should not be that tight. I was able to use a pair of channel locks on mine and it worked perfect.

I just tightened the packing nut on my '02 Sanger V210. You definitely have to be a contortionist to get to it. I bought 2 adjustable slip nut wrenches at Home Depot for about $15 bucks a piece and they worked really well. You can find them in the plumbing section of almost any hardware store. FWIW it only took about 15 minutes to get the right drip setting on mine. Good luck, the joys of owning a V-drive!
