oil change

How do all of you DIY guys drain your oil? All of the boats I have had in the past had a hose attached to the drain plug that you could snake through the drain plug but my new boat doesnt have this. I have one of the hand pumps that screws onto the top of the dipstick but I tried it tonight and I wasnt able to pump anything out of it. Any ideas?

Also, if I ever do get the oil out does anybody have any suggestions on what type should go back in? It is a 97 PCM 351 Boss engine. I nkow my old carborated 351 called for either straight 30 wt or 40 wt. Would the same be good for the 97?

I've always used a fluid extractor. Like the one you used but it has a hose that goes threw the oil dipstick tube down to the oil pan. Works good with little effort.

Mobil 1 15-50! You can't go wrong with that oil in older engines. It's got really high ZDDP levels and resists breakdown.

you need to get a better seal on the dipstick
i use the jabsco one in my service dept

Like nick said. Oil extractor. Shove it in pump it and let her drain.

It works better if the oil is hot.

you can buy the drain hose kit from skidim. The first change will be lots of fun cuz you need to drain 100% of the oil out, add the line, the refill. but it will make every oil change after that a breeze.

I guess I will give the pump another try. I just hand tightened it on there to test it so I will try getting it tighter and letting the oil heat up first. Do you guys that use the pump pull the drain plug after pumping from the dip stick or does the pump get enough of the oil out?

try using a pair of pliers on the pump to the dipsitck
if you do not have the rubber o-ring on the hose fitting you will suck air

Make sure the oil is warm.

It will also be needed for your trans fluid.

Ive tried a bunch of pumps and junk, this one acutally works. TOTALLY worht teh money.

YOu can also change the trans fluid on your (chevy) trucks. Suck fluid out before you drop the pan!

only thing i do not like on that one is that over time that line will break from metals and petroleum

I have seen it and it sucks to replace the dipstick

Best is a good pump and 3 gallon bucket minimum, i made a 5 gallon with a fuel/petroleum pump off eBay

around $90 if you want high rate flow, 1 mins, $60 if you wan a 10min change

i charge by the hr, so high rate is better for me and customers
