I rode all summer with this French guy who seemed to go massive with his backroll! Not that im jellious or anything (LIE) but thought i would check out a few things to improve my lame backroll!!!

AS you throw it should you be totally leaning on the line??? If not how much tension should you have on the line???

Do you throw your board 90 degrees to the boats path or straight infront of you as you hit the wake???

Which shoulder should you look over??? I ride Goofy

Thanks

Danny

just cut harder and start your cut farther out. For goofy you will want to look over your right shoulder or touch your chin to your right shoulder as mr. murray would tell ya.

As you start taking them bigger they become much more slow and "natural" of a rotation. Sometimes people throw them low because they cut too far outside the wake and cannot hold that progressive edge. I personally try to come back in a little on my edging out to allow me enough line to really get a progressive edge on it. Good Luck..

Just think of your big back roll like a raley cut into the wake. Building alot of load on the line. Just imagine you are edging away from the boat. Stand tall at the wake and try not to throw into roll. Keep the edge through the wake, and start to look towards the sky over your front shoulder (left shoulder for left foot forward).

One key to controlling the speed of the rotation is using the handle. Keeping the handle in closer to your hips speeds up the rotation. Letting the handle alittle farther away from your hips will slow things down alittle.

Clear to me for some while are the parameters for these tricks. I put in some effort understanding the instructional video and the instructions from friends.

At the end of last season i was still not capable to throw the full trick.

What became clear to me in practice is, for instance the edge speed should build up to maximum in the last 6 to 9 feet, thats the major thing.

Edge and so speed maximized to early, will ruin line tension, and results in flattening the edge when at the wake.

Try a tantrum, starts far out long approach and starts with high edge speed, flattens out and low line tension.
Try a back roll, short approach fast build up of speed, speed still building up when edging the wake and so the line stay under full tension.
The moment you fear and brake, tension is gone.

So train those tricks both and you will learn the difference coming from far out and coming from close
Tantrum edge hard in the beginning and back roll edge hard at the end.

In the beginning i could not separate those two tricks in approach, so i could not throw them both. I could not feel what the early and late edge did.

So train on line tension at the wake is not possible when you start far out with an early edge. The edge should come in latest as possible only then you can tension the line.

So for me lots need to be done.

Some guys throw it natural and some have to sort it out the hard way.

I started doing w2w far out with early edge and high speed, due to the speed i could do the w2w. Result only half the height.
I am still suffering this, each day i force to remember 10ft out, maximize edge when close to the wake.

You need to work on your progressive edge. I might be just repeating posts here but try a backroll with 10-15ft cut. The beginning of the cut I usually let the natural force of the rope pulling towards the center of the wake start my cut. I dont actually cut right away. When the rope starts to pull me inwards do I start my cut. I usually end up with an almost 90 degree angle to the wake with a hard edge.
I think about throwing the board up and behind me also which helps keep the tension on the rope as you release. Hope this helps.
