Anyone ever ski behind one of those Cobalt inboards? They look nice, but I've never seen the wake? Good, bad?
Old     (kstateskier)      Join Date: May 2002       05-19-2003, 11:53 AM Reply
Brad,
I never skied behind one, but I saw one at the '97 KSU tournament when I was a senior in hs. They had a white one with a purple stripe up at Emporia, the team was trying to get them to give it to K-State for the year. The boats were ahead of their time with some of their ideas. They were the first to have the bolster seat in an inboard, now MC "MasterView", Malibu, and others all have it. The hull was from Hydrodyne, and though I haven't skied behind a Cobalt, I have skied behind some 'Dynes and the wake is hard. I think Cobalt got into the market about 3 years too early, I think they could have been very successful building luxury wakeboard boats, but couldn't break into the slalom market, as it was too small.

What do you have going on this weekend Nick? Me and 2 buddy's are heading down to TRL on Friday night. If you down in the area at LOTO you should come down to TRL on Sunday or Monday or something and we can spend the day at the course. I need someone to drive anyway because my 2 friends suck driving the course...

Trevor,

It's an '03 Response LXi, the first year for that model. I know of a promo boat identical to that one for sale in Nebraska.

Thanx Nick,

I'm going to start looking under my couch cushions for loose change and save my pennies. Hopefully next year I can buy it.

Right now I have an 89 Checkmate with a 200 HP outboard. If you cut really hard you can actually pull the boat from side to side pretty far. (Good way to cheat to get that last buoy). But I'm not complaining. It runs good and I can ski behind it. Thats all that matters.

Trevor,

I don't know where you are located, but if you are seriously looking next year, getting a promo might be the way to go. You can save some cash and if you get in contact with the people early enough and put down a deposit, they will order it just like you want it.

Sean that is a nice looking MC. What is that an 85 or 86? My uncle has an 86 and driving it is like driving a vette. Thats when a ski boat was a ski boat with no fancy radios and accessory lights and everything else.

Sorry Keith, I really like the X-9/209's, they look killer, but as a slalom boat, they are terrible.
Old     (bbeach)      Join Date: Jul 2002       05-21-2003, 6:23 AM Reply
The 209's really do have a bad slalom wake... Huge wall at slalom speeds.

How is the Malibu Response for a multi-purpose boat? I slalom but I have one brother that Wakeboards and another that Kneeboards. If you put a wedge on it will it throw a big enough wake for them?
Old     (bbeach)      Join Date: Jul 2002       05-21-2003, 7:36 AM Reply
The Response can throw a pretty good wake when weighted and with the wedge down... Great slalom boat!
Old     (kstateskier)      Join Date: May 2002       05-21-2003, 9:19 AM Reply
The Response is probably the best multi purpose boat out there if you are mainly going to slalom. As a three event boat (slalom, trick, jump) nothing beats it. If you want a little bigger wake and don't want to give up much in the slalom department look at the Malibu Sunsetter LXi.
Old     (wiltok)      Join Date: Feb 2003       05-21-2003, 8:24 PM Reply
Then why was it named "Towboat of the Year" in 2001??

Yeah - I can agree with you that the wake is not the best for slalom. However, I ski, kneeboard, hydroroil, barefoot, wakeboard, wakeskate, tube (maybe not me but friends) and spend considerable time just cruising. It does all of those relatively well - it's not designed to be a "specialty boat.". My previous boat was an 88 ProStar 190. Good for slalom - but really small and not to good for a bunch of friends. The X-9 is perfect for me...

Ok, it looks like next year may be out of the question. Today was supposed to be a good day. The boat hit the water, started up like a champ, but it won't go into gear. The gears are fubar. I'm sick of sinking money into it. I need a new boat. What should I buy? Has anyone heard of Moomba? I can get a 2003 for 22,000. I don't want to spend much more than that. I have no problem with used. Ski season is rapidly approaching here in Michigan and I'm without a boat. Help.

Trevor, you can probably get a '01 Response in that range. Some of the Moombas ski pretty well, but the quality is not quite as good as Malibu. What are you looking for, you can find a pretty good slalom boat a couple years old for $22k.

Nick, After skiing behind one and your recommendation my boat of choice would be a Sunsetter LXi. They seem too expensive though. I was also looking at MasterCraft Pro Star 205's. My only requirements really are an open bow, good all around tow boat, no V-Drive, and not a Mercury or Mercruiser engine I hate those things. I'm looking into about the '97 year range right now.
Old     (kstateskier)      Join Date: May 2002       05-23-2003, 10:42 AM Reply
Look at a Malibu Echelon. They have a walk thru open bow and you should be able to find them in that range. Go to malibuboatowners.com, they can answer your questions and there are a lot of Malibus for sale there.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that I skied behind a new Response LXI this weekend and it was awesome! Soft wake, and tons of room! That 375 hp Hammerhead was tons of power! Sweet Boat!

Did everyone have a good MD weekend? Weather was a little sketch but otherwise good time!

parks31, bbeach or anyone else with an old MC. I have a 88 190 Prostar. I use it for Footin and Slalom mostly, but do enjoy trying to wakeboard. Have any of you guys found the best setup weight for throwing the best wake? I have a B.I. FlyHigh pole and S.L. 600# sac. Oh ya, Great looking boats
Old                04-15-2004, 7:32 AM Reply
Curt, I mostly slalom but just learned how to board. I bought a skylon for my friends and they seemed to really like the wake. The skylon allows people in the back which helps. Later I will add some sacs but for now I am still learning.

Trevor-Check out the MC dealer in Holland, MI. He has a couple 205's in mint condition. I just got a 96 Sport Nautique for $18500, for $22 you are able to get a great boat. OR Try Aaron at Watersports Marine in Waterford. In my OPINION, MC and Nautique are tops and the rest fight for scraps.

Here is my ride. It works great for slalom and wakeboard with enough ballast. Compared to the MC and CC products, I have about 10 years of gas money leftover.

John,
Thanks for the info but I bought an 03 Malibu Sportster last year. It's funny that this thread is over a year old and still alive. A few posts up, the yellow Sportster with the yellow truck is mine. I just never got around to posting pictures of it until this year. I live in Waterford and got it from Skiers Pier. It was a Ski School boat so they gave me a great deal on it.

I don't know if I agree with you or not about brands since I've never been behind either of those boats but from what I hear, MC and Nautique are some of the best out there but their prices also reflect that. For what I paid for my Sporster the same MC or Nautique would have been mid 90's or Carbureted, No Tower, and No Wedge. I bought Malibu because it's the best Bang for the Buck.
Old     (kstateskier)      Join Date: May 2002       05-26-2004, 3:27 PM Reply
Malibu and MC are my favorites as far as 3 event boats. Nautique is a great boat, but the trick wake sucks! Malibu and MC boat have great wakes for all 3 events. The Malibu is a great bang for your buck boat, though the new Response LXi is hard to beat even up. Probably my favorite boat for skiability and looks is the ProStar 197 though.
Old     (bbeach)      Join Date: Jul 2002       05-27-2004, 8:07 AM Reply
I also think the new LXI is a hard boat to beat but the Prostar 197 is a great boat and the wakes are sweet!
Old                05-27-2004, 1:07 PM Reply
BU is the best bang for the buck...for now..longevity of the boats has yet to be proven. I looked at a new LXi this yr and was very tempted. They are beautiful boats. Bu loses a TON of value in the first couple yrs...as most of them do, but I feel MC/CC hold more value as the years pass. Bottom line though, it's the previous owners caretaking level that means the most! Trev-what lake are you on? I'm on Lake Sherwood.

I live on Maceday Lake in Waterford. It's a pretty decent lake. I order to get in some good sets we have to up pretty early. Pretty much can't do anything but hang out on the weekends though. The weekend warriors come out in full force with their Deckboats and Tubes.
