I'm looking for a nice lake around the midwest for a week trip of relaxing and boarding/skiing. Looking to rent a house for a week. In past years we have gone to smith mountain lake, va and norris lake, tn. I flew there on those occasions, however now I'm taking my boat and I'm coming from Wisconsin.

I had looked at Lake Barkley/Kentucky Lake (a beautiful lake I imagine), and that's ~550 miles and the furthest I want to travel. I'm wondering if there are any lakes that may be nice and a bit closer. Friends will be traveling from Ohio, so I guess I'd like to avoid going straight west if there is even anything over there.

Looking for mid-late June, so the water should be warm just about anywhere.

Thanks!

i lived about an hour away from lake barkley/kentucky lake. not the best riding spot, big lake and has tons of coves but the main lake is always rough

google maps would help you in this situation. Could stumble upon a diamond in the rough.

Save some money and come up north a little bit (Central Wisco)... My neighbor rents his house out (beautiful house) about 100 yards from a bar on the lake... keep your boat right on the water if you want... he has a lift too

Wisconsin Dells would be an awesome place to ride

our lake is super mellow during the week... the cable is close, maybe worth a consideration

check out the Syracuse IN area.. its in northern indiana. tons of lakes, and great riders. would be a perfect place to chill and ride, its actually already a very popular place to do exactly what you are talking about!
Check out Lake Syracuse, Dewart Lake, Lake Tippy, Lake Wawasee, and Webster lake.. there are sooo many more too in the area!
cheers and good luck

If you would be at all interested in camping you should check out Truman Lake. It's located in Warsaw, MO. Outside of the lake there is really nothing to do.

BPulsher, I think you are thinking of Lake Taneycomofor the trout fishing!

I was actually thinking of the river below the dam, not the lake itself. Actually the only time I have ever been there was a business trip to Mountain Home. We went up and looked at the lake (which was really nice) and ate at a trout restaurant below the dam. Fishing activity was high though. BTW...I hate trout. Ate like twice a week as a kid

not to be a downer but i would stay away from lake webster. gets blown out super easily and the only spot shielded from the wind is small and after you get two boats in there the glass is gone

dusty thats true.. i live in that area and def not one of my favorite lakes to ride. i was just giving options.. but its true, not a lot of places to hid from the wind and it tends to be loaded up with fishing boats

Lake Cumberland is much better than Barkley or Kentucy Lake.

I've heard LOTO (Lake of the Ozarks) is a must see. Get a lake map, otherwise you will get lost so I'm told.

Did everyone see the 550 mile limit? Bull Shoals, Lake of the Ozarks, and some of the other lakes are out of that range. Just saying. Cumberland would be the nicest lake closest to where he wants to be.

^^ Yea, thanks for pointing that out. I have also been to cumberland before, very nice lake...just a touch further than kentucky lake.

Anyone been to Eagle/Wolf creek in Illinois? Looks to be a decent sized lake and would cut a few hours off the drive. However I was having problems finding any place to rent down there.

Never been there. Shelbyville can be nice though. Far be it from me though, WI, has more and nicer lakes than IL. You won't find anything even close to Norris in IL.

+1 for Lake of The Ozarks. You can always find some butter, its super deep, and the party scene is phenominal!

check out this place. Huge house, right on the water with a boat slip and boat ramp. 1/2 mile from the sandbar where everyone goes to party on this lake.
