Has anyone ever run across a mini-dv player that you can insert into a drive bay or one that could connect via firewire? I've seen the real expensive ones around $1k but all I am looking for is something other than my camera to rewind, play, and transfer to my pc with.

There are none cheaper than that that I know of. In fact I didn't realize you could get one for a grand. Sony makes the best one. JVC has some reasonably priced standalone DV VTRs

Your best bet is to buy a cheap minidv cam ($450) and use that to capture/transfer video.

I found these two JVC miniDV Decks at B&H Photo for under $1k (on sale now...)
