I have the 4 rockford fosgate 6.5s in the cabin that came with my boat. They are currently running off the sony headunit, but I plan on installing an amp for the cabin speakers eventually. How do these speakers hold up? I know they will sound better with an amp, but are they worth keeping? I was thinking about replacing them with the polk db's.

You will like the polks better amp'd or not. Fosgate does make some decent speakers, just not the entry level stuff they put in at the factory.

Says they will take 50rms, 100 watts max.

Should sound way better on an amp, try it out, if you don't like them, upgrade.

I have the same speakers in my 07 VTX. I just sunk a bunch of money into a new amp and sub instead of the cockpit speakers (for now) and I cannot believe the difference! My local stereo guys did a great job stuffing a 10" Alpine sub behind the drivers kickplate without moving it from the stock position. Props to Teskey AVU for the great job. Looks stock until you turn the little knob under the dash and the boat shakes! I was very surprised how that sub sounds.

Nick it depends which Fosgates you have. If they installed the Punch line they can take a decent amount of power and sound good. If they are the Power's then they can handle more cleanly. Fosgates are well made and hold up well in the marine environment. I installed six of the 6.5" Powers in my last boat and after two years they still looked and performed as new. I was driving them at 90 watts rms without issues. There's a marine audio shop near me that swears by them and installs loads of them in boats. The Polks are great speakers and they may be a bit better but if they are it's not that much better imo to warrant replacing them "just because". Amp them and see what you think, you'll be surprised.

Get a 100WRMS amplifier and do not replace the speakers. The fosgate has a metal tweeter, it is going to last longer without doubt, under almost any marine environment. Any modern amp will do, they are all the same, just get one with a 50 amp fuse or bigger. I use "POS" profile amps in my boat with those fosgate speakers and they are plenty clean and loud.

Assuming you have the Power speakers, not the punches- I'm pretty sure that those are the factory installs.

Not to rant, but is it strange to anyone else that fosgate hasn't changed those speakers for 4 years?

They are the Power series line. From the responses, I think I am going to amp them before replacing. I guess I am a little bias because I have only heard them running off the headunit.

Nick, they're not bad for the interior but I would recommend others for the tower.
