looks like he landed on his board. we still don't know if he rode it off or not. according to ten-80 site, the money's still up for grabs, so maybe he didn't ride it off.

but damn, that looks really close!

If he landed it and rode away, I would say yes. Because the video ends just when he hits the water, it leads me to believe that he didn't ride it out. AWESOME attempt tho!

I'm thinking 1080/dave williams are just building the tension, getting a bit of voting done before you unleash the truth.

Cause of that I recon he did it............
Also, i always thought the first 1080 would be hs not ts, if he does land it, looks like its a really clean attempt!

Wasn't that off a DU? I thought the contest rules said no DUs. Cool looking trick though.

I say the board slipped out from under him and he bailed at the very end. Great attempt and closest I have seen so far, very clean. If he didnt hit it that time, he looks to be very close to landing it soon.
Old     (bflat53212)      Join Date: Mar 2003       01-26-2006, 6:43 AM Reply
I would say regardless of whether or not he rode away, he doesn't get the dough. The rules state:

"Entrant is required to make at least four handle passes (two in front, two in back) "

I may be wrong, but I only count 3, it looks to me like he is landing that wrapped. Just my opinion.
Old     (bflat53212)      Join Date: Mar 2003       01-26-2006, 6:46 AM Reply
Before I get blasted, I'm not saying he doesn't deserve the money, I'm just saying I could see them using that rule against him. Either way, if he rode away, he deserves the cash.
Old     (olddude)      Join Date: Oct 2003       01-26-2006, 6:57 AM Reply
I don't know guys, the handle was not in the small of his back when the video ended but there was still some slack in the line which sould allow him a chance to get the line into the proper position to ride away, if we had 1 more second of the video, I could probably make the correct call.
Old    xxxstar            01-26-2006, 6:57 AM Reply
I'm sure he landed it. I've watched that kid ride while they were filming Downside Up and he can spin. The 009 is sick.

FJ this is the guy who did the 009? That was sick! You can actually seem him almost go ole right at the end of the 1080, but then tucks it behind his back.
Old     (stephan)      Join Date: Nov 2002       01-26-2006, 7:23 AM Reply
heck even Parks' 1080 didn't have two handle passes. He rode away wrapped and then passed it as he rode away. Granted it was switch TS... Because of the hype my guess is he landed it, which is cool. That guy has some serious potential on the Tour if he is consistent. Lets hope so, I would love to see someone challenge Phil.

Best attempt i've seen since Phil's at DU or nothing, didn't he just fall over after landing it? Personally, I think this kid is insane, pulling OO9's is nuts, and for him the 1080 is just the next step. Can't wait to see him stick it when Dave posts on Monday.

Way to go Matt!

A 1080 is a 1080 regardless if you pass the handle three times or just twice then land wrapped. Parks Bonifay was the first to land a 1080, the first to land a double half-cab roll, and in my opinion should be the person recognized as landing the first 1080. I could be mistaken but I thought he landed this in a comp as well. anyway its all good and I know if Parks was put to e challenge there would be know doubt that he could do a 1080. He da man!

If legend is correct Mark Kenney was the first to land it. Parks was the first to get it on film.

You get the dumbass of the day award. The fact that Parks did his 10 switch does not mean it was harder for him. It would actually be easier for him because he spins frontside switch much easier, and backside regular. have you ever seen him do a regular toeside frontside 7 or 9? No. not to say that he hasn't done them, but that left foot forward is his dominant frontside spinning stance.

Oh, and if Parks' 10 didnt have two handle passes he would not have even landed a 7. A 1080 is three handlepasses

he does that first 5 so fast its nuts, before he even peaks out he has the first 5 done. Crazy. I cannot even imagine spinning that fast, on my ts 7 off the dub, I only do a 180 by the peak, I do the rest of it on the way down. Crazy. Just Crazy. mad props, even if he crashes. I am gunna call Paul Stokes at Ten-80 and see whats up, I'll post what he tells me.

Ed - Parks did his quite a few years ago, way before this contest ever existed.

Fellas, I may be wrong, which is very likely, but I think that parks got his on video, but not the whole thing.. I think it cutt off about the same time or a little before the clip that they are showing now. Hence the "whole trick on video" rule

By looking at the last frame, it looks like he may have actually landed it. He's landing on his board, but not leaning forward as it should be for a successful wrapped landing, but there's still some slack on the rope... Who knows? (David...)

Here's an explanation of the whole thing: Yes, Parks landed it. Kenney did it too. But after Parks' pictures of a 1080, nobody landed it anymore. It was only a few years ago that people started trying it again, which is a bummer for the progression of the sport. Snowboarders are landing 1260s, skateboarders are trying the 1080, inline skaters are landing 1440s. I'm not saying it is easy to spin on a wakeboard, but it's been, what, six years since someone landed a 1080. IT IS POSSIBLE TO DO IT. So why not do it? That's why Ten80 and Wakeworld are promoting this contest.

And... The thing about switch spinning, many riders do it. Shapiro spins better switch, Soven's 1080 attempt was switch. It's just a mental thing. Spinning doesn't depend on what foot you have forward, it depends on whether you're more comfortable spinning clockwise or counterclockwise (For BMX Riders and Inline Skaters, spinning switch is spinning opposed to the side that you're more comfortable with, while riding backwards is called fakie).

Sorry for the long post, people... I just felt lonely and wanted to say a lot of stuff.

SUCKS SUCH A GREAT RIDER THAT WAS WAY AHEAD OF HIS TIME ISN'T HERE TO LAY THE SMACK DOWN AND SHOW THE REST OF THE BUNCH WHAT A 10 IS ALL ABOUT.

Wow, Brandon you are getting worked up......

The Parks 10 was sick and there was a full sequence, but it was B/W film, not video. The rumor is that Kenny had them in his bag of tricks and that he had landed a bunch of them. Ferrero said that he saw Kenney do 2 10's back to back at each end of a comp lake off dub's.

So if this is it, which I believe it is, then it's the first 10 on vid. Congrats will be in order. Matt is a pimp.

Brandon, I'm not wishing to fuel your fire, but I would like to point out that you made the choice to come out with guns blazing in an unprovoked attack on Stephan. Stephan is very well known and friends with many on this site, he's been here for years, he consistently demonstrates himself to be intelligent, knowledgeable, thoughtful and polite. The fact that he has chosen not to fire back at you I suspect is purposeful and perhaps a testament to his character. You, on the other hand, have posted only a handful of times, and in a very rude, hateful and unnecessarily hostile aggressive manner. I mean, seriously, go back and read you own post! Who in his right mind would introduce himself to a group in such a manner? What is the problem there? And now you try to change the subject by writing that WakeWorld is conservative? What the hell does conservative have to do with acting like a grown-up and demonstrating acceptable social skills? I invite you to explain yourself if you so choose.

BTW, Sims is the man!! I agree that 009 is one of the sickest tricks ever! Wouldn't surprise me if the next 10 fell to him!

Proho, That's great, I'm happy for him, but I'm with Ed. The attitude is just not needed, it doesn't do anything good for anybody. People like Andrew Adkison, Shaun Murray, Zane, Cobe, Weddington, Mike Schwenne, Chris Dykmans, Josh Storrer, I could go on and on... guys who rip but also are cool in the way they treat others. There are plenty of great riders who feel no need to act like an a-hole toward somebody that they don't even know. Especially if he is a great rider, then why the need to front like that? Whatever, never mind.

conservative in a sense that when anyone says something off color or slightly inflammatory, even if it is a universal truth half of this message board reprimands you while the other half questions your morality.

Can someone explain why it is sometimes considered "harder" or "more stylie" to land wrapped (aka blind), but sometimes not (e.g., Parks' 1080)? Not that I am saying that one or the other is harder, but let's maintain some consistency here.

I think we'd all agree that a heel 1080 is harder than a toe 1080, but how about a flatspinned 1080. Where's the love?

Finally, I can't watch the video either, but have seen the 009. Ridiculous move. I'd be surprised if I thought his 1080 was more impressive.
Old     (antbug)      Join Date: Jul 2004       01-27-2006, 2:49 PM Reply
Well Brain Parks did land his wrapped and the reason it's not as hard on this trick (i'm talking like I can do it hahaha) is one less handle pass. If he were to pass it it would be a total of 3 handle passes not two.

Wow somehow my comment got jumped on, that is great. Brandon, I mentioned that it was switch toeside I guess you thought I implied that made it tougher. It would for the average joe, but not Parks. I know he spins that way easier, all you gotta do is watch Shafted from back in the day and he's poppin of Switch Toe 9's like crazy in there.

You say this site is conservative and get up in arms over "universal truth". So I guess everyone knows I'm a dumbass for saying switch TS is generally harder. Apparently its better for you to talk $#!T about someone you know nothing about than for me to comment on wakeboarding. That makes a lot of sense. If I'm wrong I'll be the first to admit it (see below), but damn son, you don't gotta come out and be an A-hole. I don't think my comment warranted the level of response you levied upon me, just chill it's wakeboarding.

Anyhow in my original post I meant to say "three passes" with third coming as he rode away.

Oh please don't throw me in the briar patch!!!
You guys dont get to vote on getting me kicked off. This place is a classic example of an eastern communist society.

Seth, yeah the 'ped is a sick ride. You know you'd motor with that fine honey on the back any day! I swear those people were probably wondering what the hell was going on, me hooting like a maniac and you laughing like a goon...good times. It was much like a western socialist society, very "free market" if you will...

I love history class.

Mr. Poop, as it goes Mark Kenney is the first to have ridden away from the 10. Supposedly Kenney(RIP) landed a few. No one ever caught it on film though. Parks has landed one, luckily Bill Doster was there and got it from a really good/close angle.
