Seems like a pretty dumb thing to do. This is what insurance is for. Though, I suppose, his family would have been compensated by the life insurance company if this turned out slightly different.

Yaaaaaaa, I'm not sure how I feel about this one too. Definitively a tough thing to do, but swimming and pulling your 40 or so foot burning boat away from the docks to save other peoples boats...

I would bet there is something more to the story.

Personally I wouldn't have swam it out. Chop the dock lines and let it drift out of the dock but not swam it out.
