It really depends on, what kind of equipment and power you have running it. Myt set up with 4 6 1/4 in the tower with about 100 watts a piece you can hear it pretty well. However on my mastercraft with factory two clarion's and factory amp I could not hear it. In reality I never hear the tunes, when your doing tricks or most of the time in my sets. I would say four to six with an amp with good clean power and you will hear it.

The one boat i ride behind has two 6-1/2" on the tower that are crossed over(very important) with plenty of power and you can hear them really well while boarding. But really i would say about 15 speakers is what you SHOULD have.
