Well, I hurt my knee pretty badly this weekend and have a MRI scheduled later today. This made me begin to wonder about other people who have injured their knee and what trick you were doing. I've posted mine below:

Possible torn meniscus / ACL
Tantrum

Completely torn ACL, partial Meniscus Tear, small MCL tear - - Tantrum, summer '06

Complete ACL tear and bi-lateral meniscus tear. TS Backroll in spring of 2004. Landed straight legged and popped it.

It took me one year to ride strong again and another full year on top of that to get my full range of motion back and ride without a knee brace.

1999: HS W2W ( maybe my 20th attempt). Torn ACL.

Got it repaired in 2001. Didn't feel strong on it until 2005. Riding without thinking about it now . . .

1995 left knee complete ACL tear and lateral meniscus tear. HS Backroll landed straight legged.
Many meniscus tears in both knees from 2000-2004 from various jumps some as small as wake to wake jumps. 5 knee surgeries in all.

Pretty sure I tore my MCL about 3 months ago, taking it easy healed it up. How'd it happen? taking one hand off the handle rotated and landed the wrong way. Probably the scariest thing that ever happend to me at the time.

i wasn't wakeboarding...i was ski jumping.

was going for my first attempt at a "heli" off of the ski jump last summer, after taking 6 years off totally from show skiing. i got half way around and quit rotating. landed backwards from about 10 feet in the air at about 34 mph. i had two words come to mind while i was in the air looking at the water below - "OHHHHH $*%T!" the driver might have been going a little fast but i think i still would have F'd up my knee no matter what. sprained/tore my MCL...lemme tell ya, i felt like a real D-Bag limping around the Mayo Clinic on crutches, dressed in a suit and tie.

Oct 28, 2006: Completely torn ACL, large bone contusion (I think thats the medical term), Meniscus tear. Occurred on: Scarecrow, straight legged landing into the flats. No audible pop but felt a pop, not much pain, almost took a set later that day.

Tantrum! The takeoff was good, fairly laid out throughout the trick. Started going out the front on the landing and attempted to force the landing. With lots of weight on my front leg something gave out and went CRACK! much like someone breaking a broomstick over their leg...except it was my leg.

Did it on Saturday, then waited until the doctors office opened on Monday and started calling my insurance and local doctors to go straight for an orthopedic surgeon. Figured I had a 95% chance it was going to require surgery since I could not straighten the leg. X-rays, MRI, CT scan, and 90cc of blood drained from the knee (Which is a lot) the doctor made his evaluation. End result tibia plateau fracture...in 6 places.

No cast! Whoo hoooo...but did get an immobilizer. Had to immediately start trying to straighten the leg so that the bone would settle back in place, since it was 1 mm to high. I was able to do a presentation 4 days after the break, but did it from a chair instead of standing like I normally do. Started riding a MTB at 3 weeks, long before I could even walk. Then started walking within 1 month, scuba diving again at 5 and 6 weeks, then yesterday, 2 months after, I was back on a board again. Though jumping was not in the cards, it sure felt good to be back on a board, carving on all 4 edges. Still relearning to walk, not limp and the rehab is much worse than the actual injury.

Sorry for the crappy pic, it was taken with my camera, but it is the only one I have of the injury causing tantrum. The trick was plenty big and I landed at least 7 feet outside the wake.

Backroll with toe straps...er...uhm...toe strap. Those boards didn't stick to the feet like they do now.

Torn ACL, PCL, strained MCL. Of course at that time in medicine they couldn't do a surgery on both ligaments, ACL and PCL. I got lucky and the ACL healed. But I don't have a PCL anymore.

So it goes.

May 2007 on a Tantrum. I was the 4th person who has blown out their knee behind that boat on a tantrum. We were even joking about it before I took my set.

ACL. Attempted and overrotated indy tantrum off the double up to flats.

Lots of tannys and a few crows on here. I'd expect a few heel front flips too.

'04 ACL on HS backroll. Bindings weren't tight enough and my foot slipped thru the binding about 8 inches and tweaked my knee into a very strange position.

3 weeks ago ACL same knee doing HS backroll and put my landing gear down too early. Landed straight legged and tore it again. Surgery in 2 weeks.

I'll be riding with the Donjoy for now on.

MCL and damaged meniscus on backroll. No pain on these until I did a few in crappy water and went early and fast. Cased the wake while spinning in perfect vert, body still moving and front foot dug into wake and stop it while body was still spinning. Knee moved in new direction after that. Takes alot of mind power now to throw em.

ACL avulsion (where the acl is pulled out of your tibia) and torn meniscus in two places from a frontside 180 (something I never thought would happen from that trick) back in june of 2003. I just went big, had my weight off and landed with too much weight on what became my lead leg. My leg just sort of bent in and I heard that infamous pop.

It became more complicated though because I ended up having a serious scar tissue build up--what ended up being three separate layers. i had a surgery for that and ended up with a knee infection. To put in all of that work for rehab and then to have it all go down the crapper like that was a serious morale destroyer and a pretty life changing injury. My range of motion is still not anywhere near where a normal knee would be.

But now I wakeskate and smile.

ACL. It was completely severed. Had to borrow from my hamstring.
May 1999.
Same as electricsnow, mine was on a frontside 180. It was the weekend I bought my Malibu. I went bigger than normal behind a heavily weighted boat (not mine) and landed with too much weight on what became my lead leg. I ended up riding the rest of the summer. Rode when I could and laid off when the knee swelled. Had surgery in late October and started riding again in February.
I still have no feeling around the scar, but the knee is fine...

R2R with straight leg landing, stretched ACL, backroll to torn meniscus on same knee, cased the wake..then frontside 180 to POP. I had the patellar tendon graft last March. Most disagree, but I ride the Donjoy brace for mental security...I added the snap fasteners to the velcro straps, works great. I'm trying to work up the nerve to throw BR's again.
Good luck, you're young and should heal fast.

Tantrum to Blind = Torn Meniscus and partial ACL tear for me in 1998. Haven't tried the trick since.
Old     (btr1)      Join Date: Feb 2002       08-21-2007, 9:18 AM Reply
1997 - popped front foot out of bindings on double up and landed back on board and it rotated around my back leg - torn right ACL, right patellar tendon used
1998 - hyperextended leg 2 months after surgery - torn right ACL - donor ligament
1999 - previous surgery didn't take, was riding and felt fine but always had swelling after riding. 2 doctors thought it was just scar tissue because the joint felt secure until one went in to clean it up and ACL was there but dead - donor ligament
2003 - Switch tantrum gone bad (hit stray roller and went to revert out the back) - torn left ACL, partially torn MCL - left hamstring used
2004 - kicking ball around with kids and literally stubbed toe sideways coming down from kicking out to the side and pop - torn left ACL - right hamstring used.
2007 2 weeks ago - toeside backroll to wake case, heard a pop and hoped it was scar tissue. Let minor swelling go down and then I rode for the next week and knee felt fine but then landed slightly offbalance on a 3 and felt a jolt in the knee like things twisted a little too far - possible torn left ACL and possible retirement(I'm getting too old to keep blowing knees) - seeing doctor Friday.

Summer 2007 - Blew ACL, torn Meniscus, Crow Mobe, Landed straight legged.

1st time: Landed straight legged on a Scarecrow and tore/replaced left ACL
2nd time: Came up short on a corked FS 7 off the kicker snowboarding and blew the right ACL/MCL and all the pretty things that attach to them.

3rd time: HS Front to Fakie, hurt right ACL

4th time: S-Bend, hurt both ACL's (landed upside down)

5th time: HS Front WAY TOO BIG in a comp. Tried to roll out but broke board and couldn't take the landing.

I won't start listing wrists, ankles, neck, and spinal injuries.

But I'm healthy and strongly believe in PT and working out!!

Blew out ACL , slight tear in MCL , Torn meniscus - Left foot came half out of binding on Air Raley, Toes hanging over edge after landing.

First ride the following year, re-tore meniscus.

Back out there after two surgeries and landing it all!

Mute ts 360 landed still spinning, partial ACL tear.

Said good bye to the rest of my ACL later that year on the UNR football field, savin my RB @$$. It was on that fake grass turf crap that all the fields have now. I hate that stuff!!! Haha My RB was in front of me I made a cut back to block a guy and my knee just went. We scored. When my knee went I droped. Had a nice lil chop block. I was not trying to chop the guy (i fell in pain) but it worked. My coach played the video over and over the next day. It was gross you could see my knee bend the wrong way.

July 07 Huge nuclear off the 3 roller. Stiff landing. Didn't think I ripped into it enough so traveled way more up than out. Cleared the wake but came down hard.

Torn ACL MCL and meniscus. 4 screws later sitting here healing. Never knew you could get so tore up from stomping a trick. Getting old I guess.

How many of your Dr's told you it had more to do with getting a good stretch in b4 you ride? Just curious? I didn't stretch that time like I normaly do b4 a set. Will make sure I do that religiously.
