My mastercraft recently just had a new gelcoat and the shop that did it took off my regulation sticker or what ever you call it to show the proper amount of passengers and weight. Well they lost it so is it possible to get these?? I emailed Mastercraft but still have not heard back from them.

you don't need it. it's a recommendation only

Is this true in all states. I have a 2000 Mobius V and it says it can only hold 10. I had 11 on it a couple weeks ago and it didn't seem over loaded at all. It would be nice to know in case I ever get stopped by the sheriff.

And yes I know you need a life jacket for everyone on the boat.

This may be untrue, but i have heard, only boats 20' and under need that. Over 20' and it's just a recommendation, so you know what is safe. (A VERY conservative estimation of safe)

I'm pretty sure its required so when your boarded a sheriff can see the capacity or your boat. I could be wrong but why else would it be in the boat?

More than a recommendation try it's the law. Federal law requires that label to be there stating max occupancy and weight. Don't know for sure if they can write you a ticket for exceeding this directly but I imagine that they could write you one for unsafe operation of the boat. If nothing else harass you and give you and inspection. http://www.uscgboating.org/regulations/fedreg.htm

Now that I think about it, none of my three Sanger's had one. And my latest one I bought brand new.

Hey guys sorry I missed this first time through. I apologize Robb you are correct. I thought something seemed off.
FEDERAL LAW

183.31 - Applicability

This subpart applies to monohull boats less than 20 feet in length except sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and inflatable boats.

I have a feeling a sheriff can still give you a ticket and harass you just for operating your boat in an unsafe manner. Not to mention if you have been drinking it is all he would need to check you and give you a breathalyser.

It is a suggestion. As long as you have life jackets for everyone on the boat and they (the ppl) are sitting on the seats (not on the floors) you are okay. As previously stated, that sticker is meant more for boats < 20'

If it's over twenty feet it is a yacht. If it's under twenty feet it needs a capacity sticker. (In Canada it's about 20 and a half feet). You need appropriate sized, approved life jackets for all occupants of the boat (except infants) somewhere in the vessel.
I think that the theory is that when a boat gets big enough the skipper is the one responsible instead of assuming that they won't be.
