More Knee Brace Quest-Extension Stops

What degree of extension stop did you doc or fitter set you up with for boarding?

i set up mine, did not check the angle, I just set it so it extends as much as possible without my knees locking. riding with knee braces has really put a kink in my quest for style...

i use the biggest ones that came with my cti - can't remember how many degrees

Alice-So do you have a tremendous knee flex going on when you are standing up in the boat getting ready?
Is that just something you get used to?

to be honest i can still almost straighten my leg - i've never been 100% happy with the fit of my brace. but my legs can generally hyper-exgend quite a lot! but yeah, it means i can't straighten my leg completely with it on. it's fine for riding boat but gets a bit annoying at cable if i end up walking a lot!
It definitely didn't take me long to get used to, and it's well worth is given so many acl injuries are caused by straight-legged landings... I'm fairly sure it's the extension stops that have saved me a few times. if i'd been wearing the brace without them i would still have been screwed... imo.

Robot, I have CTI's and use the lowest setting up from 0 degress (straight leg). I think its 5-15 degrees or something like that. I have been happy with this setup.

hey whats a good knee brace to invest in? i wear one of those tight knee sleeves all the time and i hate how all the knne braces bunch up behinde ur leg and rub the crap out of u.. any of u have problem kneeling or anything? cuz i know i sure do. there is no way i cud ride a knee board putting both my knees in that postion and sitting kills me. but just wondering if yall had a link to a good knee brace that wud work.. i wear the sleeve and it works ok just keeps it real tight around my knee. its been 2 years since my surgery but as im sure yall all know once u have surgery or mess up a knee its just never the same anymore..

CTI's for sure, their made for extreme sports and their made to be in water. A lot of wakeboarders chose CTI's

i can't think of any brace you'll be able to knee board in... definitely not any kind of rigid brace anyway!

no i wasnt saying for a kneeboard just giving a example of how i cudnt bend my knee in that type off way..

ok, well if it's for wakeboarding, and you want a brace that will actually do something to prevent injury, you'll need a rigid brace like the cti, or the podmx. yes, they're expensive, but so is surgery...
you're lucky, the cti custom is $1000 here in australia.

u think that wud be alright for wakeboarding? i only need the left one and i wud split the cost with someone if they just needed the right one. because the seller wont sell them seperate.

those are cti 'off the shelf' (OTS) models. nothing wrong with them, but they are a little cheaper than the custom models, in case you're wondering at the price.
note though - that cti vapour that was listed is actually a custom brace - custom for someone else!! I don't know how that seller could justify trying to sell it to someone

No, i have no idea what those braces are. I think you need to know the brand, and then find a sizing chart on the manufacturers website to make sure they'll fit, before you drop any money on them! and make sure they're not a custom brace either - if they are they won't fit you!
you need to send the seller a few questions. Also ask why they're selling? braces often need upkeep, like new pads and new straps - they can be quite expensive on their own! I honestly believe you'll be better off buying a new one. som of those cti OTS braces seemed like a really good price, but make sure you take a lot of measurments of your leg and make sure you're getting the right size.
Also, i wouldn't worry about trying to find a 'small' one - these braces are designed the way they are to give you maximum protection. once you've worn one a few times you're not even going to notice it.

I don't think so... You'd have to read up on what that particular model it targeted towards - its purpose could be quite different to what you're looking for. Just looking at it, I can see it has soft straps rather than rigid pieces above and below the knee.
people have been suggesting the cti because we know it works for what you want to use it for.

The first link looks perfect! buy it! it is an OTS model which is designed to fit anyone.

the 2nd one is a custom brace - ie custom for the seller - don't buy someone elses's custom brace!!!!! it won't fit you!

I have a custom CTI and I have tried different stops. mine almost give me full extension. That being said I have tweaked my knee probably 3 or 4 times with this setting.

I have actually heard stories of these braces breaking femurs before they would blow your knee. Kind of scary to think about. Anything is possible though and a knee brace definately doesnt make you bullet proof.

Any more thoughts on the degree setting for extension stops?
Mine are due in this week and the therapist on the phone suggested "straight leg" so I know he doesnt have a clue.

^^ Straight leg isn't going to cause an injury, hyper extension is what does it, otherwise everyone would need knee braces just to walk around. Your clueless therapist might actually know what he is talking about.

yeah, but if you can't get to straight leg then you're certainly not going to get hyper extention - hence the benefit of extention stops! depends on your definition of straight leg too - most people don't realise they have a bit of hyper-extention going on in their straight leg position.
I still think that the further away you are from being able to straighten your leg the better!!

And I am assuming bracing isnt perfect, so if you set it to straight, any play is going to hyperextend.
I dont mean to defame the professional therapist/fitter, I usually take pro advice as directed. This time the person told me he would have to research the type, brand and extension stops question, so I knew he wasnt coming from a position of immense knowledge.
