I just received notice yesterday that I am being deployed to Iraq sometime around the first of May, and am expected to be gone for 4 months. In my field this sometimes turns out to be as much as 5 months, but rarely longer. I have a 2004 Malibu WS 23 LSV, and I am wondering what I need to do to prepare it for storage. I have used it at least once a month all winter here at Lake Mead, but I am still on the same tank of fuel that has been in the boat since December. I believe it is a 50-gallon tank, and there is probably at least half a tank left. I keep the boat inside an enclosed storage unit. My wife is due to deliver our 4th child on May 21st, and I have a huge test that I have to study nonstop for the next 5 weeks for. So we won't be taking the boat out much before I leave. We will probably be able to go out once at the end of April. Should I try to run as much of the fuel out as possible, then dump some fuel stabilizer in the tank for the little bit of fuel that remains? I don't have a carb to get gummed up, but what about the fuel injection system? Any other things to worry about?

Sam, I always put sta-bil in mine, but with a full tank. When full it's easier to keep moisture out.

Sam dump 3 small bottles of Sta-bil in the tank then fill it up. That's all you need to do, in regards to the fuel.

Thanks guys. Johnny, it's crazy how much I've been working the last few months. I haven't had enough time to really even take the boat out for a good long day all winter. Just an hour or so here and there. At least it will have low hours on it for a while... I just got Perfect Pass installed, the rear 750-pound sacs project completed, and bought a surfboard and a Sky Ski. I gues I'll have to wait until the fall to hook up with you guys....

Sam,

First off thanks for making the sacrifice and serving our country. Secondly if you've put on 50hrs+ I'd change the oil, and add stabil to the fuel. Make sure it's run long enough to run through the entire fuel system. I don't recommend filling up the tank as it's just more old gas you'll have to burn up later. With the modern plastics moisture isn't and issue. If you wanted to take storing it to the extreme is to fog the engine. While under cover you might just put some dri-ez to help w/ any moisture issues.

Don't fill it up just put stabil in with what ever is the tank. Make sure you run it so the stabil gets into everything. It's in a garage and your in a very dry climate. I never fill my boat up with gas before I put it away for the winter and I live in Oregon. Change the oil and you be ready to go.

Thank you for being in the military.

Malibudude and face planter are right on the mark. Sta-bil what gas you have, run the boat and change the oil. If you have time, drain the block, drain the external engine hoses at the gearbox oil cooler, raw water pickup, exhaust manifolds etc. (unless you have a closed cooling system). Drain the ballast system. Stagnant water is an enemy to your boat, so try to do a basic winterization even though you are in Nevada.

Thanks for your service and May 21 is my birthday so your baby is going to be off to a good start!
