I promised I would do a quick review of the SWELL system on my new boat since many have not gotten to try it. We got out 2 times this past week and just did some quick sets to make sure things are working and start playing with the wave to dial it in. I am VERY happy so far and we have just done a few configurations..... Here is what we have done and how it was weighted. Some pics as well.

Boat and Motor - SC350 with ACME 1235 prop

Water temps was 50 degrees.... Brr.....

People in boat - Both times we went out we had roughly 3-5 adults in the boat while person is surfing. Most of the time we had them sit on the side we surf, but comfortably and not imperative, but it did make the wake bigger and nicer. You could weight it evenly, but it is better with a bit more weight on that side so we moved passengers over. Boat ends up listing just a bit if you look at the pic of the boat in the water. Moving a passenger or two to the front of the boat definitely lengthened the wave also.

Ballast config - Full stock ballast + the Flex plug and play ballast full. Swapped the rear bags to 750's

Lead - Had 300 lbs in lead and we adjusted it around the boat. Still going to adjust this more, but in the pic it was even distributed in the back. I have another 150 lbs of lead at home and I plan to add it to the front of the boat for the next outing to try and make up for the person we had up there.

Speed - We ran between 10.6-11 MPH

Wake plate - Ran different configurations.... All the way down was longer and clean. All the way up was shorter and steeper. I liked it all the way up and speed about 11 mph. Both kept the wave very clean.

SWELL - Swell was set at SKIM. I see this as the way we will usually do it. Still need to do some sampling with the BARREL setting.

You could definitely weight the boat even and have a clean wake on both sides. Might need to throw a few extra bodies to the port side to make up for the prop rotation and drivers weight. We played with switching from side to side and it is real quick and works, but we did not do it behind the boat. I don't think we will really utilize this. The wave on the starboard side looked real big...... We never even tried throwing any weight over there, it just did it. I am sure cause prop rotation and extra driver weight. Soon enough we will have someone surf that side, but no doubt it will be easy to dial. We were more concerned with the port side. We still have some more tweaking to do to account for different configurations of people in the boat, but I have a real good idea. My main goal was to see how it does when you introduce more weight to it and if a surf system boat can do as well as listed. So far the answer is yes on throwing more weight. I was not expecting it to be as good or big as a non listed boat, but I have to say I am real happy and know we will even get happier as we test configurations. It is not going to be as big as my buddies 247 listed and a ton of weight, but so far I am way more impressed with it than the NSS or the Surfgate that I have seen. I will be fair and admit that those boats that I did see did not introduce as much extra weight as I did. More to come on all this as the weather shapes up. Rain and 50 degrees for a while...... Everything else worked great. I need to do some adjustments on the ballast timers and figure that all out but for now..... Here are the prelim pics just taken from inside the boat. No fancy angles down low from the side of the boat or it would look even more impressive........

Great looking boat! i crawled around one at the Sacramento Boat show as well as the SA's and the freeboard difference between the two was tremendous. Thanks for the write up.

Nice Diggs !!!

We rode our new 2014 SA350 with swell this weekend. Same ballast here except no lead.
We rode at 10.6 with the skim going on the starboard side and 10.9 on the port.
My Friend Garret already crossed sides and back without the rope.

Wave looks very simular to yours Diggs!

With 4 people in the boat, everyone kinda needed to be on the same side as the surfer. When we had 7 in the boat - it did not make a difference where anyone sat for the most part, but if our largest guy sat on the sunpad - there was a definite difference.

The biggest thing I like is that you can fill all of the ballast and either wakeboard or surf by just changing the speed of the boat.
Plus the fact that there are NO ballast bags showing!!!! I think the heater has been a big hit here - even though we are in Houston.

Tip: life jacket inside dry suit. Comp vest works even better inside suit.

Ron - second pic is with a comp vest inside.... Just got all suited up on that first run and forgot, so I threw it on the outside. Sometimes I just use the air in the dry suit for flotation, but with the water temp, I thought it would be a good idea to throw one on.

Diggs,

Thanks for this information! I'm looking forward to getting my Swell equipped boat in mid-April. Did you get the 750's from Wakemakers? I'm contemplating the same but plan to try the flex ballast first.

Thanks again

You should be able to get the 750's from Wakemakers or your dealer. My dealer just happened to have them in stock, so I purchased them the day I bought my boat. You can definitely get a nice surf wave stock, but definitely gains mass with more weight.

Nice lookin SC!

Had my new to me SA out for the first time today. Really happy.

Question: how do your ballast meters register the extra bags? mine were showing about 80% when all the hard tanks and all the bags were 100% full

The gauges for the bags run on timers which can be adjusted through your vision system. It takes a little bit of finicking but once you get the time right you never have to worry about it.

Bumping an old thread. Any luck getting a wave on the star board side? A friend of mine just got the SC550 with the swell, we can't get a decent wave to save our lives on the starboard side, port side is great. We spent 3 hours playing with swell, ballast configurations, etc, the other day,. We even had the pdf cheat sheet printed out, tried the advised settings and the wave was terrible and not surfable . He even upgraded his rear bags to 750. I've been wake surfing for 12+ years and have set up tons of boats and have never been as stumped with this boat as any. Any tips would be appreciated.

This picture is awesome. Don't know what ballast/swell configuration you're running here, but it looks dialed!

On port side...

We have only surfed the starboard side once so far. Took a bit more dialing, but we had it clean.
Have you tried adding more weight to that side? Another bag or emptying the port side some? Adjusted speeds? The Barrel instead of the Swell tends to get better over there also.

Email Jon Allen as stated above though. They are riding it daily around the country and I have seen their pics up on Facebook and have got their starboard side clean...

So it turns out the swell system computer is broken and/or needs to be updated. Big thanks to Jon at Skiers Choice for taking our call during his evening and doing face time while we were on the lake to help diagnose things. Hopefully my buddy will get his boat dialed in the next day or so.

After you having owned the SC for the season, what is would you say your best wave surf configuration is? I am debating on a couple boats (new A22, SC, VLX) and trying to narrow down my choices. I priced a SC350 about a month ago and the dealer had a SC450 as well. If the 350 can handle the weight required for a great wave then I would probably go with the 350 simply because I am familiar with that engine now in my 01 VLX, but if the 350 would struggle here at sealevel then I would rather go ahead and test the 450 when I go test drive one. My crew is made up of primarily regular surfers and I am the only goofy footed rider.

Ive put roughly 35hrs on my sc350 in the month that ive owned it.

The settings for surfing have been stock liquid lead + 1100s in each corner which probably only fill to 850ish(simply a guess) with a 650lb integrated bow sac. Surfing eevrything 100% full with atleast 1 person on the surf side, 10.8mph, wakeplate anywhere from 35-50, skim setting. This produces the single best wave ive ever ridden. As for the starboard side you need to list the boat slightly, 80-90% on port side, few extra bodies on that side just to overcome the prop wash.

Wakeboarding we dont ever slam the boat, we end up about 30% in each rear locker and 50% up front and this yields a pretty beefy, firm wake.

I was worried about thre 350 as well but we have never had an issue getting on plane quickly.

^^ Which prop are you running? I am thinking if I go with the 350 I will make them swap the 1235 for either a 2079, 2313, or 2315 unless the 1235 is plenty?
