Hey, so my boyfriend's SuperAir Nautique is having transmission problems. At times, it's making some "clunking" noises so we think the tranny is going to go out soon. However, there are no other symptoms. BUT, are we able to still use it until that happens? Will it cause anything else to get messed up if we do this? We want to go to the lake this weekend but don't want to cause any further damage. PLEASE HELP! :-)

Nice username!

Has he checked the fluid level? They can be rebuilt, so you're pry doing more damage. Post in the 'find a third' if you're itching to ride, but I wouldn't take it out if it were mine.

How long has this been going on? Forward and reverse?

It just started this past weekend...and only going forward..and only makes the noise right when you start then goes away. AND it probably made the noise every 7-10 times you went forward.

so i was just wondering if it's just on the brink of getting bad??

thanks for replying!

Trannies are tuff. Doesn't sound like its on the brink, but I wouldn't let it go too long.

The fluid should be red when you check it. If not, it's slipping.

Also check the shift linkage, cable, and adjustment; clunking sounds to me like it might not be going all the way into gear for some reason.

To elaborate on what trace said, the fluid shouldn't have any bubbles in it or be pink. If so, change fluid ASAP as it has water in it.

Once it is in gear, does it slip at all at speed? If so, you are looking at a total rebuild. Are you running any weight? Does in only happen with weight? If you put it from neutral to idle speed in gear, does it still clunk? If you make the transition fast, does the sound not happen?

Water would make it look like strawberry milk, and that would mean a fluid change and probably a new cooler. If it's black, the trans is slipping and will need rebuilt.

It could be the damper plate going out and not the tranny...

If it were a tranny issue I would check the V.drive first, what years is the 210?
If it has a Walters unit, they are notorious for weak U joints.

Open the engine hatch and the seat over the Vdrive, put the boat in gear and check if the sounds comes from the engine/drive connection (damper plate) or from the drive/Vdrive connection (U joints)

Check and report back!

The starter in my old 04 210 went out a few months back. It would start squealing and clunking while in neutral, and would stay engaged for a few seconds after I put the boat in gear, then go away. The dealer figured it out with a quickness and swapped out the starter. Never heard the noises again. Might look into that also.
