So i have had my back rolls dialed in for a while. I know real impressive right? I have decided to try and start grabbing it. I tried a couple times last year and both times missed the grab but went into a 360 with the backroll that i almost landed. Well i tried one last week wiped out hard. The only thing i can remember is going up the wake and starting to go for the grab then the next thing i know i was on the back of the boat moaning like crazy. The spectators said i went out of control and did a weird face plant. My back, chest and ribs kill. i have gone to a chriopractor and i have some muscle and ligament damge and also need to have some adjustments done to straighten out my spine. So any tips? has anyone had something like this happend to them while trying the same thing. I have had some bad wrecks before but i have never blacked out and been in so much pain as this.

sounds to me like a you went into an off axis ole 360. ive done this many times while trying my o/a 3s.
im not sure what you need advice on? yes ive had bad wrecks while trying new tricks more than i care to remember. its part of it, it makes stomping the trick gratifying. im more proud of landing something that ive worked at and paid alot of dues on rather than something i picked up rather quickly.
if its any consolation i ruptured my eardrum when i first started trying backrolls

Can you do r2r's? I think they would be much easier to start grabbing.

Let it be known that I have been trying but continue to chase the grab on my r2r's. I'm trying to grab nose or method. So any tips would be appreciated!

jarret when i grab my roll(i do them regular not mexican) everything stays the off the wake. as soon as i initiate the roll i really bring bend my knees and bring my ankles to my butt. the grab will be right there. keep the rope in tight with your rear hand to keep the rotation going. when i learned the nose grab i really focus on bringing up my lead knee(after the rotation has been initiated) and boning out my rear leg. go for the method grab first then work the nose.
btw my r2r is pretty solid now. it took a couple of times riding to get it figured out but it was way easier than i was making it. late

Sweet. Thanks for the tips. I have been trying it like you described but seem to chase the grap the whole time. That's why I was thinking it might be better to almost watch my board and grab it before turning my head into the rotation. Maybe I just need to suck up my knees more instead. I'll give it a go this weekend and let you know.

B - Look at some tip tricks on the r2r. It is a really fun trick and IMO looks a million times better than a normal roll. I hardly ever do normal backrolls anymore after learning the r2r.
