Does anyone know what kind of box the sub in the floor of the BU's is in. If it's not in an enclosed box already, has anyone ever put a box in behind it to increase performance?

Are you talking about the sub that's in the footwell of the driver's side? What year and model Malibu is it?

It's probably a Rockford Fosgate. I think Malibu may have used Kicker for a model year recently too.

To answer your question though, yes, you can take out that kickpanel and put a pretty good sized box back there. I have a box that is just under 2.0 ft^3 in that location and it fits great.

oh yeah, I think that Malibu ran those driver's side subs as free air...

It's an '07. yes, I'm talking about the sub i the footwell. It is the rockford sub. How much did it help the performance? Is it a considered a free air sub, or is it just being ran as that?

David has 2 kicker 12 l7's, and it absolutely pounds....sit on the back locker, vibrate your sac, type pound. ridiculous amount of bass in a boat. I have 2-10's and a 12 in mine and his blows mine away.

I installed a Kicker CVR 12" sub in the fake floor with a box behind it at the drivers feet in my neighbors V-ride and it hits harder than most boats running 2 12's, its being pushed by a 1k mono block amp. Sub was $80.00 and amp was $160ish, best investment he could have ever made. The other option is to build a whole new box that replaces the fake floor cover it with carpet, vinyl or something else you like, fiberglass is the best route. Then mount the heater outlets on top of it, going this route can allow you to put up to two 12's or a single 15 either way will give you more than you should ever need.

Do you have any pics of the L7's installed?

straight from the factory malibu makes there boxes small and out of abs plastic.

My 07 has a plastic box. It sounded good with the factory Fosgate until the spider wires broke off the cone. It was a low end P2, I replaced it with a Kicker Comp CVR because the higher end Fosgates where too deep for the box. The Kicker flexes the plastic box which causes distortion unless I press my feet on the box near both sides of the speaker. Long story-short, build a better box if you want to upgrade the sub.

I'm really confused on what I want to do now. I like the clean look of Ryan's, but Mikes is something with a little bling to it. Ryan, by any chance do you know your box dimensions?

I don't think I could live without the leg room.

Not off hand. I want to say they got these directly from the kicker website. I can inquire if you would like.

My set up isn't too flashy but let me tell you, you feel it. Considering where the sub is pointing, I may never have any children.

You don't have to worry about inquiring. I think I'm going to keep about the same leg room as you did, but build a custom box with fiberglass exterior. I figured I could paint it yellow to match the secondary colors, and the dash of the boat. I was curious about box size to see how many cubes of air you were pushing.

I'm not sure what size malibu you have, but you can live without the leg room. I'm 6'5" and don't have any trouble being extremely comfortable while driving or sitting in the driver's seat.

This is an old pic and I have since put some matching carpeted fascia boards and such to make everything look nice and clean, but here's how it looked right before that step:

By the way, both of my boxes are just under 2.0 ft^3. I have 2 L7's running on a 1500 watt Massive Audio amp and like Adam said above, they hit pretty hard.

And I recommend reinforcing the dash. I had my gauge panel removed and had it filled with spray foam. The foam was sprayed into a heavy duty bag so it didn't ruin anything.

David, does your stuff rattle?
Old     (tparider)      Join Date: Aug 2003       02-08-2008, 5:18 PM Reply
rattles - yes, i've had a few, but i've been able to correct them all. My cupholders would rattle so i took them out and wrapped more electrical tape around the top inside lip. Both driver and observer side dashes rattled too, but that issue was solved by cutting strips of black foam into 1 inch width strips, folding them in half lengthwise, then pressing them between the dash and windshield. you hardly notice they're there and i don't have any rattles...

Anyone heard of American Bass subs?
Old     (jvpeck)      Join Date: Jan 2008       02-08-2008, 11:19 PM Reply
Is the 08 sub free air or is it a box?
Old     (jvpeck)      Join Date: Jan 2008       02-08-2008, 11:32 PM Reply
Does the 08 have a free air or an enclosed?

I can only assume with regard to cost and installation on the manufacturing side, all of the subs that come direct from the factory are free-air.

David - I don't have any experience with American Bass subwoofers, but judging by the fact that you can get a 12" sub for $50, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they're probably not that good.
