I'm adding up all the costs that I'm going to incur for purchasing a new boat, and trying to figure out the best stereo set-up and costs involved. I'm going to most likely run four 6-1/2 speakers in the boat and 4 6x9's on the tower, and I'm thinking of kicker speakers all around, and possibly an L7 sub. Would I be ok running two amps for this set-up, 1 for the internal speakers and sub, and one for the tower speakers? I'm thinking either Soundstream or Phoenix Gold amps, which models of each would be recommended to get good sound w/o totally breaking the bank? Thanks in advance for the input!!!

Two amps should be fine for the setup. What size L7 are you looking at? Soundstream Picasso series is very powerful w/o spending lots. Also, the PG

Tantrum amp line is good as well. Which ever you

can get cheaper go for. As far as which models I need to know what size L7. If it's anything

bigger than a 10" you should either get a separate amp for the sub or choose another sub

which requires less power.

Even the 10" L7 is rated at 600 watts rms so to try and run 4 speakers + L7 is questionable on one amp.

it sounds like I'm most likely going to need three amps to run a decent setup...

You could run the front bow speakers off the stereo itself, run the rear speakers and sub off the amp (just a thought), and try an L7 that way, or maybe an L5 or Comp VR would be better due to a little less power. I am running a Comp Vr 10" and I am very happy with it.

what about running something like a kicker 800 watt amp to run the 6x9's on the tower, and a kicker 700 watt 5 channel for the boat speakers and sub? The kicker 5 channel has a 200watt sub amp.

I actually have a comp VR 10" in my current boat, and with an Eclipse amp that only sends I believe 150 watts to the sub, it still sounds pretty good. I'm guessing that I would want to have something a little smaller than a solobaric 12 though, maybe hold onto my comp VR...

You could run one Memphis Belle 16-ST1300D

5 channel amplifier. It puts out 80wattsx4 and has a 1000x1 classd amp too.

Check it out http://nexxon.com/memphis/amps.htm

At $699 it's not cheap. Then you could get a cheaper 4channel amp for the tower speakers (U.S. acoustics, Pioneer premier).

The kicker amps would work well too.

Use the 800.4 Kicker to run all eight speakers at 2 ohms so each speaker gets 100W RMS. Then get a Kicker 600.1 sub amp to run your L7 sub at 2 ohms, which will give the sub 600W RMS. I already have a Kicker 600.1 running my 12" L5 and plan on adding a Kicker 800.4 to run my four tower speakers and four boat speakers.

BTW...ebay has a place selling brand new Kicker 800.4 for $260, not bad...
