When checking v drive oil are you supposed to do it cold or warm?

Nobody?? I'm asking because I checked mine cold(getting the boat ready from winter)and it looks bone dry. On a car when checking tranny fluid you do it warm and running. So wondering if its the same tho I doubt it. Looks like I might have a leak in it but can't really identify from where.

Ya. Found out in a car you do it running because when you start your car the torque converter sucks up fluid so you gotta do it running or it will be inaccurate.
